Although there are conflicting dates as to when they met ( some sources state that they met in January 1989 at the Satyricon nightclub ), Love stated that the two first encountered one another in January 1988 at a Dharma Bums show where she was doing a spoken word performance, and Erlandson stated that both he and Love were formally introduced to Cobain in a parking lot after a Butthole Surfers concert at the Hollywood Paladium in 1991.

A minor controversy came to light when Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers revealed on Marcy Playground's website forum that the cover art for Shapeshifter had originally been conceptualized and commissioned by Leary for his band's aborted After the Astronaut album.

The festival, created by Perry Farrell and Marc Geiger, was to become a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction, but at the same time it was a music festival with bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Butthole Surfers, Fishbone, The Rollins Band, The Violent Femmes, Body Count, and Ice-T. During this time Jane's Addiction began to get more exposure than they had ever before.

Thomas and Vegard had formerly shared times in a band called De Dype – a noisy and subversive ensemble equipped with a certain amount of Butthole Surfers inspiration.

Within a few years, the two found themselves opening for the likes of underground favorites such as the Butthole Surfers and Henry Rollins.

While Parker ’ s previous recordings were all over the musical map, the new group focused on their psychedelic rock influences, combining Kite ’ s films, a homemade light show, and an excessively loud sound volume to create a multi-sensory live experience … akin to what the Butthole Surfers, My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, and The Flaming Lips were doing at the time.

Derived from a jive phrase the band had heard on a vintage race record, the name intended to reflect the group's jazz and blues influences as well as an edgy punk irreverence in the same vein as the Butthole Surfers, though the decision was ultimately made on impulse, as the members had run out of time to figure out a name to put on their posters and doubted their longevity past a handful of shows.
