Many groups of Guatemalan exiles were armed and trained by the CIA, and commanded by Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas they invaded Guatemala on June 18, 1954.

The most notable human rights abuses of this period were the brutal slaying of Bishop Juan José Gerardi two days after he had publicly presented a major Catholic Church sponsored human rights report known as REMHI, and the disappearance of Efraín Bámaca Velásquez, also known as Comandante Everardo, who, it was later revealed, was tortured and assassinated in 1993 without trial by Guatemalan Army officers on the payroll of the CIA.

According to the article cited, the still classified NSA report is incorrect based on the CIA documents that were declassified which show that Powers ' account of being shot down at altitude was accurate.

After being debriefed extensively by the CIA, Lockheed, and the Air Force, on March 6, 1962, Powers appeared before a Senate Armed Services Select Committee hearing chaired by Senator Richard Russell and including Senators Prescott Bush and Barry Goldwater Sr.

Lockheed fired him, it was widely believed, because the book cast negative publicity on the CIA.

The January 2003 CIA paper Iraqi Support for Terrorism states that al-Libi told a foreign intelligence service that " Iraq — acting on the request of al-Qa ' ida militant Abu Abdullah, who was Muhammad Atif's emissary — agreed to provide unspecified chemical or biological weapons training for two al-Qa ' ida associates beginning in December 2000.

The article reported that on August 7, 2002 CIA analysts had drafted a high-level report that expressed serious doubts about the information flowing from al-Libi's interrogation.

In 2006 the Bush Administration announced that it was " transferring high-value Al Qaeda detainees from CIA secret prisons so they could be put on trial by military commissions.

The CIA did not inform the FBI when it learned that Mihdhar and Hazmi had entered the United States, and Mihdhar was not placed on any watchlists until late August 2001.

The State Department also highlighted the fact that, in the case of Richard Welch, " Grivas bizarrely accuses the CIA of playing a role in the assassination of one of its own senior officials " as well as the Greek government's statements to the effect that the " stay behind " network had been dismantled in 1988.
