Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were Spanish mystics and reformers of the Carmelite Order whose ministry focused on interior conversion to Christ, the deepening of prayer and commitment to God's will.

St Mary's Episcopal Church, also known as the Priory Church is the town's oldest building, built for the Carmelite Order of friars in the 1450s.

There are several Carmelite figures who have received significant attention in the 20th century, including Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, one of only three female Doctors of the Church, so named because of her famous teaching on the " way of confidence and love " set forth in her best-selling memoir, " Story of a Soul "; Titus Brandsma, a Dutch scholar and writer who was killed in Dachau Concentration Camp because of his stance against Nazism ; and Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross ( née Edith Stein ), a Jewish convert to Catholicism who was also imprisoned and died at Auschwitz.

After returning to a normal life, he went on with the reformation and the founding of monasteries for the new Discalced Carmelite order, which he had helped found along with his fellow St. Teresa de Ávila.

They add, that several learned men, French and English, who had been at Lisbon to verify the fact, had made enquiries at the Carmelite monastery, where Gusmao had a brother, who had preserved some of his manuscripts on the manner of constructing aerostatic machines.
