The Cator Estate was built on part of the estate formerly owned by Sir John Morden, whose Morden College ( 1695 ) is another notable building to the south-east of the heath.

Slightly closer to central London, he also planned a major estate – today known as Blackheath Park or the Cator Estate – to the east of the centre of Blackheath village, and south-east of the Heath itself.

In 1873 English brothers James Hamilton Cator and Arthur J. L. ( Bob ) Cator were sent by their father, British naval officer Captain John Bertie Cator, to Kansas in search of financial opportunity.

The sizeable estate of Blackheath Park, created on lands of Wricklemarsh Manor by John Cator is situated east of Blackheath Common.

Work started in 1783 after Cator bought the Wricklemarsh mansion ( formerly owned by Sir Gregory Page ) and its 250 acre ( 1 km² ) estate for a bargain £ 22, 250.

The Palladian mansion ( designed by architect John James ) was gradually demolished from 1787 onwards and Cator began to break up the estate into small packages of land to be individually developed.

His estates were inherited by his nephew John Barwell Cator, but became neglected, and it fell to another Cator, Albemarle Cator, to expand the developments of Beckenham and Blackheath to take advantage of the growth of the railway network during the early 19th century.

There is Simon Groom, a representative of Messrs. Cator & Bliss Ltd., a British armament manufacturer, who is sent to Ixania to get hold of the Kassen secret by hook or by crook.

( The surrounding land later formed part of the Blackheath Park housing estate created by John Cator, after he purchased Wricklemarsh in 1783 ).

The station, which was opened by the South Eastern Railway in 1890, is named after the nearby residence of the Cator Family, demolished in 1896. Clock House retains its original street level booking hall and the remnants of its platform canopies and was formerly known for its tendency to flood whenever overwhelmed by the Chaffinch brook.

The Beck flows into Cator Park, where it is joined by the Chaffinch Brook.

John Cator ( 1728 – 26 February 1806 ) was a wealthy timber merchant and landowner responsible for the layout of much of the areas around Blackheath and Beckenham, both in London — and both of which were in the county of Kent during the late 18th century.

Landowner John Cator granted development leases to Searles and builder William Dyer to design and build a series of high quality dwellings, intended to appeal to upper middle class buyers, situated on the south-east side of Blackheath.

These include Forest Hill, Harris, Cator Park School for Girls and Sedgehill Schools.

There is only one noticeable park in the Glenside area, which is located on the corner of Conyngham and Cator Street.

In New Beckenham, the River Pool Walkway, running north from Lennard Road near Cator Park, includes a conservation site and naturalised areas ; the route is part of the National Cycle Network.

Cator died in 1806 and was buried in the churchyard of St George's Church, Beckenham.
