Generally, the Catskill Formation underlies most of the lowlands, and sandstones of the Huntley Mountain, Burgoon, Mauch Chunk, or Pottsville Formations cap the mountains.

The famous Catskill Mountain House was also located just outside Palenville.

Palenville historically is considered the ' First Art Colony in America ' ( as noted by Dr. Roland Van Zandt, author of The Catskill Mountain House ).

Phoenicia is also the western terminus of the Catskill Mountain Railroad's tourist operations ( which run on the former Ulster and Delaware tracks ).

Within it lies Slide Mountain, the Catskill Mountains ' highest peak.

Many of the Catskill High Peaks, including Hunter Mountain, the highest in the county and the second-highest in the Catskills, are in the town.

In New York Cole sold five paintings to George W. Bruen, who financed a summer trip to the Hudson Valley where the artist produced two Views of Coldspring, the Catskill Mountain House and painted famous Kaaterskill Falls and the ruins of Fort Putnam.

Past Phoenicia, the surrounding slopes become steeper as the road and creek curve around Panther Mountain, one of the Catskill High Peaks, to the south.

A decade later hikers interested in peak bagging formed the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club, an organization similar to the better-known Adirondack 46ers, to promote the climbing of 34 of the 35 peaks listed below (" Southwest Hunter " was added to the list in 1992 ).

Upon his return to the States he worked as a waiter / maître d ' in Catskill Mountain resorts in upstate New York during their heyday.

Other Catskill essays told of fly fishing for trout, of hikes over Peekamoose Mountain and Mill Brook Ridge, and of rafting down the East Branch of the Delaware River.

* July 29 – Narrow gauge Catskill Mountain Railway opens to carry passengers from Hudson River steamboats to connections at Palenville, New York to the Catskill Mountain House destination resort.

* Narrow gauge Catskill Mountain Railway, Otis Elevating Railway, and Catskill and Tannersville Railway end passenger service to the Catskill Mountain House destination resort.

* August 4 – Narrow gauge funicular Otis Elevating Railway opens to carry passengers from Catskill Mountain Railway trains connecting with Hudson River steamboats to the Catskill Mountain House destination resort and the Catskill and Tannersville Railway.

But in the course of collecting them they explored the area of the Pine Orchard near North and South Lakes on the Escarpment in Greene County, which would in the next century become the site of the Catskill Mountain House.

On the north side of that peak, the Long Path descends more than via a zigzag route past several waterfalls to Palenville, crosses NY 23A then goes back up the other side of Kaaterskill Clove via the Old Overlook Road to the Escarpment Trail, the site of the legendary Catskill Mountain House, North-South Lake State Campground, and finally up to North Mountain with its inspiring views back over the Escarpment and the lakes.

It overlooks the North-South Lake State Campground, an area where resort hotels such as the Catskill Mountain House were once located, and thus has long been a popular climb with hikers.

North-South Lake is an 1, 100-acre ( 4. 4 km² ) state campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve near Palenville, New York operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation near the site of the historic Catskill Mountain House overlooking the Hudson River.

Cole would be a frequent guest at, and lend his fame to, the Catskill Mountain House, built in 1823 by a group of businessmen from the nearby village of Catskill on the " Pine Orchard " overlook that the Bartrams had made famous in their visit 70 years earlier.

Cole was a member of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Catskill, and designed the present church building ; a stained glass window there honors the Cole Family.

Shortly thereafter, Unadilla Village was again settled, and originally called " Wattles Ferry ," It grew after it became an important stop for travel west, the Catskill Turnpike crossing the Susquehanna at Wattles Ferry, located in the eastern end of the village.

Also featured as a regular event was a game of " Simon Says ", directed by Catskill hotel Grossinger's entertainer Lou Goldstein.

" Kill " also shows up in location names as in the Catskill Mountains and the town of Fishkill, New York, which was the subject of an etymologically naïve campaign by animal rights group, PETA, which wanted a more animal friendly name.

The film was primarily shot in and around Margaretville, New York in the Catskill Mountains circa June 1999 ( posters for Margaretville's 4th of July " Field Days " can be seen in shop windows ).

A stretch from Catskill to Cairo was also once part of the Susquehannah Turnpike.
