Sauternes is a subregion of Graves known for its intensely sweet, white, dessert wines such as Château d ' Yquem.

Further out in the Bay of Marseille is the Frioul archipelago which comprises four islands, one of which, If, is the location of Château d ' If, made famous by the Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo.

During his fourteen years imprisonment in the Château d ' If, Dantès befriends the Abbé Faria (" The Mad Priest "), a fellow prisoner who is trying to tunnel his way to freedom, and who claims knowledge of a massive treasure and continually offers to reward the guards well if they release him.

It is only after he revisits his cell in the Château d ' If that Dantès is reassured that his cause is just and his conscience is clear, that he can fulfill his plan while being able to forgive both his enemies and himself.

In 1811, while under surveillance at Auxerre, he was accused of having provoked a riot against indirect taxes known as the droits réunis ( afterwards called contributions indirectes ), and was imprisoned in the Château d ' If, where he remained until 1814.

The Château d ' If is a fortress ( later a prison ) located on the island of If, the smallest island in the Frioul Archipelago situated in the Mediterranean Sea about a mile offshore in the Bay of Marseille in southeastern France.

The cell named after Edmond Dantès at the Château d ' If

The isolated location and dangerous offshore currents of the Château d ' If made it an ideal escape-proof prison, very much like the island of Alcatraz in California was in more modern times.

The modern Château d ' If maintains adjacent cells named after Dantès and Faria as a tourist attraction.

The Château d ' If is listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.

In 1868, Nat's uncle James acquired the neighboring Château Lafite vineyard.

In 1933 Philippe expanded the Mouton-Rothschild estates with the acquisition of the neighboring Château d ' Armailhac.

In 1832 Château Figeac sold 15 hectares / 37 acres to M. Laussac-Fourcaud, including part of the narrow gravel ridge that runs through Figeac and neighboring vineyards and reaches Château Pétrus just over the border in Pomerol.
