The Collect Pond ( or Fresh Water Pond ) was a body of spring fed fresh water, occupying approximately 48 acres ( 194, 000 m² ) and as deep as 60 feet ( 18 m ).

Canal Street takes its name from a canal that was dug in the early 19th century to drain a contaminated and disease-ridden Collect Pond into the Hudson River.
