Following Unitas ' departure, the Colts would make the playoffs three consecutive season from 1975 to 1977, losing in the divisional round each time.

The rivalry would in the following years be virtually negated by very poor play of he Colts ; the Colts would win just 117 games in the twenty-one seasons ( 1978 – 98 ) that bracketed their 1977 playoff loss to the Oakland Raiders and the 1999 trade of star running back Marshall Faulk ; this included a 0 – 8 – 1 record during the NFL's strike shortened 1982 season.

One of Casper's most memorable games as a Raider came in a 1977 Divisional Playoff game against the Baltimore Colts.

Jack Trudeau would finish out the season as the starter, taking the Colts to their first playoff game since 1977.

These moves along with others saw the Colts began to turn around their fortune with a playoff appearance in 1995 and 1996.

After two consecutive playoff appearance, the Colts would regress and go 3 – 13 during the 1997 season.

Following two consecutive playoff losses to the Patriots, the Colts began the 2005 season with a 13 – 0 record, including a regular season victory over the Patriots, the first in the Manning era.

The Colts won their first two playoff games against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens to return to the AFC Championship Game for the first time since the 2003 game, and they would face the same opponent in the New England Patriots.

The two teams met twice a year ( interrupted in 1982 by a player strike ) 1970 – 2001 ; with the move of the Colts to the AFC South the two teams ' rivalry actually escalated, as they met three times in the playoffs in the South's first nine seasons of existence ; the Jets crushed the Colts 41 – 0 in the 2002 Wild Card playoff round ; the Colts then defeated the Jets 30 – 17 in the 2009 AFC Championship Game ; but the next year in the Wild Card round the Jets pulled off another playoff upset of the Colts, winning 17 – 16 ; it was Peyton Manning's final playoff game with the Colts.

The largest defeat in club history was a 52 – 0 loss against the Baltimore Colts in 1964.

# Linebacker Chuck Howley – Super Bowl V – Howley was named the MVP for Super Bowl V despite the Cowboys ' loss to the Baltimore Colts.

On September 9th 2012 the Colts kicked off the Andrew Luck Era with a 41-21 loss to the Chicago Bears in which Luck completed 23 of his 45 passes.

The two then met in the wild-card round where the Dolphins won 23 – 17 before being blown out by Oakland 27 – 0 ( the Colts themselves had suffered a bitter loss to the Raiders in Week Two of the season when the Raiders erased a 24-7 gap to win 38-31 ).

A loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought the record to 4-2, but the team bounced back with a blowout win against the struggling Indianapolis Colts.

The following year, they lost the championship to the Colts again, giving up a 16 – 9 4th quarter lead enroute to 31 – 16 loss.

Then, the Colts avenged their sole regular-season loss against the Cleveland Browns by crushing them, 34 – 0, in the NFL Championship Game.

For the Colts, Super Bowl V represented a chance to redeem themselves for their humiliating loss to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III.

On the play, Unitas was knocked out of the game with a rib injury, and was replaced by Earl Morrall, who was widely blamed for the Colts loss in Super Bowl III.

Fortunately for the Colts, he managed to recover the fumble and throw the ball away, preventing a loss of yards or a turnover.

On the first play of the drive, Thomas was tackled for a 1-yard loss by Colts defensive tackle Bubba Smith.

Morton was ultimately selected to lead the team through the playoffs and eventually to their Super Bowl V loss to the Baltimore Colts, 16-13.

Marchibroda, who also had been the head of the Colts when they were in Baltimore during the late 1970s, had coached them the previous three seasons in Indianapolis, and they were fresh off of an appearance in a memorable 1995 AFC Championship loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

* 1958 – " Greatest Game Ever Played " – Baltimore Colts defeat the New York Giants in the first ever National Football League sudden death overtime game at New York's Yankee Stadium.

The Colts defeated the Giants 23 – 17 in the first game ever to utilize the overtime rule and a game seen by 45 million people.

Manning's Colts defeated the Chargers in 1998 and 1999, but in 2004 with Leaf long gone from the game the revamped Chargers behind Drew Brees erupted into playoff contention ; on December 26 with both teams at 11-3 the Colts hosted the Chargers with Manning close to matching Dan Marino's touchdown record ; the Chargers stormed to a 31-16 lead, but Dominic Rhodes ' kickoff return put the Colts within eight points, then with one minute remaining Manning rifled a 21-yard touchdown to Brandon Stokley, breaking Marino's record ; the two-point try succeeded, then after Brees was intercepted the game went to overtime and the Colts won 34-31 on a field goal.

Down 17-14 the Chargers sacked Manning near his own goal line ; following the ensuing punt they clawed to range of a successful Nate Kaeding field goal ; the game to overtime and two Colts defensive penalties helped set up a 22-yard Darren Sproles touchdown and the 23-17 San Diego win.

On January 3, 2009, the San Diego Chargers defeated the Indianapolis Colts 23 – 17 in overtime to advance to the AFC Divisional Playoff round.

The Colts did well under Shula, losing to the Cleveland Browns in the 1964 NFL Championship Game and, in 1965, losing in overtime to the Green Bay Packers in a tiebreaking game to decide the NFL Western Division championship.

In game 4 on home ice the Battalion on the brink of elimination had a 4-1 lead mid way through the third period and appeared to be on their way to a win before the Colts scored 3 goals in less than 7 minutes to force overtime.

The Battalion were able to come back and win game 3 by a score of 5-1 however the Colts would continue to stand behind the absolutely amazing goaltending of Michael Hutchinson in game 4 winning 2-1 in overtime.

* NFL Championship – December 28 the Baltimore Colts won 23-17 over the New York Giants in overtime.

The Patriots lost to the Washington Redskins 20-17 in Week Four but swept the rest of the NFC East and the entire AFC South ; the Patriots shut out Dallas in bitter cold and edged the Giants in the rain while hammering Philly following the infamously erroneous " They hate their coach " quote from Tom Jackson ; the Patriots also edged the Titans, Houston in overtime, and former division rival Indianapolis in shootouts while routing Jacksonville ( which like Carolina had entered the NFL in 1995 ) in the regular season, and then edged the Titans and hammered the Colts in the playoffs.

In the wild card game, the Colts fell to the Dolphins 23 – 17 in overtime.

In the 2005 NFL Playoffs, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Vanderjagt missed a 46-yard field goal attempt wide right with 18 seconds remaining, when the Colts were behind 21-18, costing the Colts a chance at overtime and ending the team's season.

The Colts wound up erasing a 21-point deficit in the final four minutes, and defeated the Buccaneers 38-35 in overtime, initiating a downslide for the defending champions.

Green Bay won both post-season games at home, beating the injury-riddled Colts ( with third-string QB Tom Matte ) in overtime by a controversial field goal, and taking the title 23 – 12 on a very muddy field ( in what turned out to be Jim Brown's final NFL game ).

The Colts would lose the next 3 games ( including game 7 in overtime ), ending the season for the CHL's most improved team.

His first two years with the Patriots were fairly uneventful ; in his rookie year he had ten catches for 95 yards and a two-yard touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts that forced overtime in a 23-17 Patriots win.

During the 2008 season the Colts won 12 regular season games, including their last 9 straight clinching a wildcard birth, but were upset 23-17 in overtime by the San Diego Chargers in the wildcard round of the 2008 – 09 NFL playoffs.

On December 19, Gates tied the NFL season record for touchdowns by a tight end ( 13 ) in a 21 – 0 win over the Cleveland Browns, and he went on to break that record in an overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts on December 26.
