With Soviet backing, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia assumed undisputed control over the government of Czechoslovakia in the Czechoslovak coup d ' état of 1948, ushering in a dictatorship.

The party ceased to exist after the coup d ' état attempt in 1991 and was succeeded by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation in Russia and the communist parties of the now-independent former Soviet republics.

The outlawing of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan ( CPK ), which followed the attempted coup, also permitted Nazarbayev to take virtually complete control of the republic's economy, more than 90 % of which had been under the partial or complete direction of the central Soviet government until late 1991.

When anti-German demonstrations erupted in Prague, Czechoslovakia, the Comintern ordered the Czech Communist Party to employ all of its strength to paralyze " chauvinist elements.
