The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (), is an international standards organisation, one of three such organisations established to maintain the International System of Units ( SI ) under the terms of the Metre Convention ( Convention du Mètre ).

The 1886 Berne Convention first established recognition of copyrights among sovereign nations, rather than merely bilaterally.

For a work to be considered pirated, its illegitimate use must have occurred in a nation that has domestic copyright laws and / or adheres to a bilateral treaty or established international convention such as the Berne Convention or WIPO Copyright Treaty.

The Conference of the Parties uses expertise and support from several other bodies that are established by the Convention.

As a result, Europe is a continent free of the death penalty in practice, all states but Russia, which has entered a moratorium, having ratified the Sixth Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights, with the sole exception of Belarus, which is not a member of the Council of Europe.

An amendment to the text of the Convention, known as the Gaborone Amendment would allow regional economic integration organizations ( REIO ), such as the European Union, to have the status of a member state.

All members of the Council of Europe ( which includes nearly all European countries, and every member of the European Union ) have signed the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects against double jeopardy.

This is allowed by the European Convention on Human Rights – note the word finally in the above quotation.

A right to education has been created and recognized by some jurisdictions: Since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education.

The European Convention on Human Rights ( ECHR ) ( formally the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms ) is an international treaty to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms in Europe.

The European Convention is still the only international human rights agreement providing such a high degree of individual protection.

After the stated aim of the National Convention to export revolution, the guillotining of Louis XVI of France, and the French opening of the Scheldt, a European military coalition was formed and set up against France.

Since the passage of the Human Rights Act 1998, the courts have been able to declare an Act of Parliament to be incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, but such a declaration of incompatibility has no legal effect unless and until it is acted upon by the government.

Any person who feels his or her rights have been violated under the Convention by a state party can take a case to the Court.

Since then the Court has appeared to be more open to finding states guilty of torture and has even ruled that since the Convention is a " living instrument ", treatment which it had previously characterised as inhuman or degrading treatment might in future be regarded as torture.

The majority of Convention violations that the Court finds today are excessive delays, in violation of the " reasonable time " requirement, in civil and criminal proceedings before national courts, mostly in Italy and France.

The Court is quite permissive in accepting a state's derogations from the Convention but applies a higher degree of scrutiny in deciding whether measures taken by states under a derogation are, in the words of Article 15, " strictly required by the exigencies of the situation ".

While Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights does not prohibit criminal laws against revisionism such as denial or minimization of genocides or crimes against humanity, as interpreted by the European Court of Human Rights, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe went further and recommended to member governments to combat hate speech under its Recommendation R ( 97 ) 20.

In the years that followed, other states subscribed to limitations of their conduct, and numerous other treaties and bodies were created to regulate the conduct of states towards one another in terms of these treaties, including, but not limited to, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 1899 ; the Hague and Geneva Conventions, the first of which was passed in 1907 ; the International Court of Justice in 1921 ; the Genocide Convention ; and the International Criminal Court, in the late 1990s.

An international agreement to create it, the Convention Relative to the Creation of an International Prize Court, was made at the Hague on October 18, 1907.

It was later modified by the Additional Protocol to the Convention Relative to the Creation of an International Prize Court, done at the Hague on October 18, 1910.

The LaGrand case was a legal action heard before the International Court of Justice ( ICJ ) which concerned the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

There were approximately 30 international conventions which the Court had similar jurisdiction under, including the Treaty of Versailles, the Air Navigation Convention, the Treaty of St. Germain and all mandates signed by the League of Nations.

During the Constitutional Convention, a proposal was made for the Supreme Court to be the only federal court, having both original jurisdiction and appellate jurisdiction.

* February 25 – The European Court of Human Rights rules that teachers who cane, belt or tase children against the wishes of their parents are in breach of the Human Rights Convention.

Following the decision, the European Court of Human Rights ( ECHR ) ruled in Steel & Morris v United Kingdom that the pair had been denied a fair trial, in breach of Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights and that their conduct should have been protected by Article 10 of the Convention.

The European Court of Human Rights ( ECtHR ; ) in Strasbourg is a supra-national court established by the European Convention on Human Rights and hears complaints that a contracting state has violated the human rights enshrined in the Convention and its protocols.

The Court was established on the 21 January 1959 by virtue of Article 19 of the European Convention on Human Rights when eight signatories acknowledged the jurisdiction of the Court.

The function of the Court is " to ensure the observance of the engagement undertaken " by the contracting states in relation to the Convention and its protocols.
