The town is sited on a steep, north-facing hill in the Tyne valley and nearby settlements include Ovingham, Ovington, Wylam, Stocksfield, Crawcrook, Hedley on the Hill and Mickley.

It is run by Go North East and provides links to Crawcrook, Newcastle, Blaydon, Prudhoe and Hexham.

From Blaydon it is possible to get to the major destinations of Newcastle, Hexham, MetroCentre and the Team Valley Trading Estate, as well as to the local towns of Ryton, Crawcrook, Chopwell, and Dunston.

The neighbouring village of Crawcrook is a nexus of coal mining nostalgia also.

Buses also travel to Crawcrook, Prudhoe and Hexham to the west, and the MetroCentre, Gateshead and Newcastle to the east.

Crawcrook lies midway between Prudhoe in Northumberland and Ryton, also in Tyne and Wear.

With major pits such as Emma and Clara, as well as several smaller pits, Crawcrook became a major coal mining centre.

Unlike many villages of a similar semi-rural character, Crawcrook has maintained its broad range of amenities.

Crawcrook main street has several shops including a library, a co-operative food store and two petrol stations.

It is on the Caldervale Line between Leeds and Bradford Interchange and was built to replace Pudsey's two original stations — Pudsey Lowtown and Pudsey Greenside — which were both closed in 1964 by the Beeching Axe along with the GNR Pudsey Loop serving them.

Aside the usual array of clubs and organisations catering for different age ranges and interest groups, Newmilns is host to a variety of different sports, leisure & social pursuits including a bowling club, a dry ski slope and mountain-bike track, three public houses, an annual cattle show, a library and three public parks at Greenside, the Glebe and Gilfoot.

The name is believed to be derived from a Saxon stone cross (' stane cross ') that until the 18th Century occupied a position on the junction of Staincross Common-which in itself is an ancient trackway-and Greenside.

Operations by " Greenside ," which is the rest of HMX-1, include operational test and evaluation, such as with the V-22 Osprey, a vertical take-off and landing tiltrotor aircraft, and support of exercises and training evolutions for the Marine Corps Combat Development Command at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.

In 2012 the Greenside Way site was demolished and the land is now likely to be redeveloped.

Greenside is next to Parkhurst and has developed Parkhurst-style restaurants.

The monastery would appear to have been located at the north-east end of Greenside Row and is shown there on the 1931 Ordnance Survey maps.

The area, along with Parkhurst and Greenside is one of the few areas of the Northern Suburbs to have cafes, restaurants and shops lining the streets rather than in enclosed shopping centres.

The Gilded Balloon is based in Offices at 25 Greenside Place in Edinburgh and is run by a small team of full-time staff

In May 1518 the Carmelite Friars ( also known as White Friars and locally based at South Queensferry ), were granted lands by charter from the city at Greenside and built a small monastery there.

A further tarn serving Greenside Mine was created in Sticks Gill ( East ) by the construction of a stone barrage.

The most upscale suburbs ( low-density suburbs ) such as Fairbridge Park, Murambi, Morningside and Tiger's Kloof are located on the north end of the city along the foothills, while Palmerston, Darlington, Greenside and Bordervale are east of the city center, near the border with Mozambique.

By his charter of 1456, James II granted the community of Edinburgh the valley and the low ground between Calton Hill and Greenside for performing tournaments, sports and other warlike deeds.

Raise has a short eastern ridge, Stang, descending between Sticks Gill ( East ) and Glenridding Beck, but these streams combine above the site of the old Greenside Mine to leave Sheffield Pike and Birkhouse Moor overlooking Glenridding.

The water from the tarn was used in a hydroelectric scheme to drive electric winding gear at Greenside Mine.
