In 1920, Adolf Hitler had just begun his political career as the leader of the tiny and as-yet-unknown Deutsche Arbeiterpartei / DAP German Workers Party, which was soon renamed the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei / NSDAP ( National Socialist German Workers Party ) or Nazi Party in Munich.

Malaysia has had regular elections since 1974, and although campaigning is reasonably free at election time, it is in effect a one-party state, with the UMNO-controlled National Front usually winning nearly all the seats, while the DAP wins some Chinese urban seats and the PAS some rural Malay ones.

At the 2004 election, the National Front led by Abdullah had a massive victory, virtually wiping out the PAS and Keadilan, although the DAP recovered the seats it had lost in 1999.

On 5 January 1919 Anton Drexler, who had developed links between the Thule Society and various extreme right workers ' organizations in Munich, together with the Thule Society's Karl Harrer, established the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei ( DAP ), or German Workers ' Party.

By the end of February 1920, the DAP had been reconstituted as the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei ( NSDAP ), or National Socialist German Workers ' Party, generally known as the " Nazi Party ".

Although the DAP remained a major opposition party, the ruling coalition had clung solidly to its two-thirds parliamentary majority.

In the 2004 elections, the DAP managed to capture 12 seats in Parliament, while PAS and Keadilan suffered major setbacks, with PAS losing 20 of the 27 seats it had held after the 1999 elections, and Keadilan lost all seats except one returned after a recount.

Chinese-Malaysian Joceline Tan, columnist for the Star ( Malaysia ) online news portal, wrote an analysis proclaiming that DAP has had difficulty in getting rid of its chauvinist image, especially since DAP continued to attack Malay dominated institutions like the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, and civil service.

Gwee, a Democratic Action Party ( DAP ) MP, reportedly argued that there was no stated order to wear the official attire and songkok and stated his desire to wear a western suit, promptly drew flak from other MPs and the Menteri Besar, Abdul Ghani Othman who had earlier on met to agree to don in the official attire and songkok prior to the assembly, whereby Gwee was absent.

The National Socialist Program originated at a DAP congress in Vienna, then was taken to Munich, by the civil engineer and theoretician Rudolf Jung, who, having explicitly supported Hitler, had been expelled from Czechoslovakia, because of his political agitation.

In 1903, a group of Sudeten Germans living among the Czech population in the Bohemian crown lands of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy had created the German Workers ' Party ( DAP ).

The DAP had joined Barisan Alternatif, an opposition alliance with Parti Keadilan and the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party ( PAS ), a move strongly advocated by Karpal and Lim.

Judge Varghese George Varughese has found seven paragraphs on Utusan Malaysia's article entitled " Kebiadapan Guan Eng " ( Guan Eng's Arrogance ) which had defamed his political career, and subsequently picturing him and DAP as anti-Malay and anti-Muslim.

A mass rally of 10, 000 was held at the TPCA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur and, by then, UMNO politicians had begun to condemn MCA leaders ( both UMNO and MCA are component parties of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition ) for their collusion with the Dong Jiao Zong and the opposition DAP.

Since the DAP and the PAS have diametrically opposed policies, they have been unable to form an effective opposition coalition.

Despite constant denials by party leaders, DAP has been depicted by political opponents as a party that favors the Malaysian Chinese minority above others.

Karpal is a controversial figure, and has been labelled along with fellow DAP politician Lim Kit Siang as a racial provocateur.

However, Barisan Nasional lost an additional four states ( Penang, Kedah, Perak and Selangor ) to the loose coalition of opposition parties composed of PAS, Democratic Action Party ( DAP ) and People's Justice Party ( PKR ) in the 2008 elections, which has been termed by the Opposition as the ' political tsunami ' of Malaysia.

In an attempt to make the party more broadly appealing to larger segments of the population, the DAP was renamed on February 24, 1920 to the National Socialist German Workers ' Party.
