The diagnosis was introduced in 1933 and will be moderately amended in the next iteration of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM-5 ) because current diagnostic criteria are unreliable.

To address these concerns, the DSM-5 Eating Disorders Work Group has proposed several revisions to the diagnostic criteria, which they hope will reduce the reliance on EDNOS in clinical settings, and promote treatment-seeking and research among affected individuals.

Specifically, DSM-5, which is scheduled for publication in spring 2013, will likely expand the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and elevate binge eating disorder to a formally recognized diagnosis.

Despite this proposal, at this time ( March 2012 ) it does not appear as if either the original ADHD subtypes will be retained into DSM-5 much less that a distinct disorder for SCT will be included.

The DSM-5 draft adds a terminology distinction between the two cases, stating that " paraphilias are not ipso facto psychiatric disorders ", and defining paraphilic disorder as " a paraphilia that causes distress or impairment to the individual or harm to others ".

However, there is discussion to reclassify them as somatoform disorder in the DSM-5 as it is unclear whether or not people are conscious of drawing attention to themselves.

The fifth version of the DSM ( DSM-5 ), due out in May 2013, is likely to reclassify Tourette's as a neurodevelopmental disorder, and to include additional diagnoses to account for tic disorders due to substance abuse or other general medical conditions.

A proposed change in the next revision of the DSM ( DSM-5 ), scheduled for publication in May 2013, would combine hypochondriasis with somatization disorder, pain disorder, and undifferentiated somatoform disorder under a single classification known as complex somatic symptom disorder.

Although the DSM-5 may move away from this categorical approach in some limited areas, some argue that a fully dimensional, spectrum or complaint-oriented approach would better reflect the evidence.
