The short story was adapted by director Ridley Scott into the 1977 Cannes Film Festival's Best First Work award winning film The Duellists.

Joseph Conrad portrayed Fouché briefly in his short story The Duel ( 1924 ), which was filmed in 1977 as The Duellists, written by Gerald Vaughan-Hughes and directed by Ridley Scott.

Dupont's series of duels fought against Fournier-Sarlovèze formed the basis for a Conrad short story which was adapted in turn by Ridley Scott in his first feature film as director, The Duellists in 1977.

He did this not only for Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, but also Ridley Scott ( The Duellists ), Paul Schrader ( Blue Collar ), James Toback ( Fingers ), and Tony Bui ( Three Seasons ).

His successes as a film producer include Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, The Duellists ( Ridley Scott's feature film debut ), Chariots of Fire ( which won the Academy Award for Best Picture ), Local Hero, Memphis Belle, Meeting Venus and The Killing Fields and The Mission with Roland Joffé ( which won the Palme d ' Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986 ) mostly in association with Goldcrest.

The town and region have featured in two major Hollywood films: Ridley Scott's The Duellists ( 1978 ) based on Joseph Conrad's Napoleonic tale ; and more recently Timeline ( 2003 ) adapted from Michael Crichton's time-travel novel, set in 14th century France.

Williams also wrote the book of Ridley Scott's film The Duellists.

The Duellists had limited commercial impact internationally.

By contrast, films such as The Duellists, fight directed by William Hobbs, Once Were Warriors, fight directed by Robert Bruce and Troy, fight directed by Richard Ryan are widely famed for including gritty, realistic combat scenes.
