The EMP Museum ( formerly known as Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame or EMP | SFM ) is a museum dedicated to the history and exploration of popular music, science fiction and pop culture located in Seattle, Washington.

The EMP Museum was founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and opened its doors in 2000.

EMP struggled financially in its early years ; as a result, Allen established the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame ( SFM ), which opened in 2004 in the south wing of the EMP building.

The EMP Museum is currently hosting a special exhibition that opened on October 23, 2010 on Battlestar Galactica, with original props and cast members as guest speakers.

On June 4, 2011, the EMP Museum opened Avatar: The Exhibition, housed in the former SFM wing of the building.

Electric fields, electromagnetic pulses ( EMP ), and stray fields from other in vivo electrical devices can all cause interference.

A better understanding of electromagnetic pulse ( EMP ) presented new problems ; a warhead set off at high altitudes and long ranges from the defensive missiles could blind the radars, making the incoming warheads only become visible at lower altitudes.

The case of a nuclear electromagnetic pulse differs from other kinds of electromagnetic pulse ( EMP ) in being a complex electromagnetic multi-pulse.

The E3 component is very different from the other two major components of nuclear EMP.

This is simply because electrons ( ejected from the air by gamma rays ) are stopped quickly in normal air for bursts below roughly 10 km ( about 6 miles ), so they do not get a chance to be significantly deflected by the Earth's magnetic field ( the deflection causes the powerful EMP seen in high altitude bursts ), thus the limited use of smaller burst altitudes for widespread EMP.

If the aircraft carrying the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs had been within the intense nuclear radiation zone when the bombs exploded over those cities, then they would have suffered effects from the charge separation ( radial ) EMP.

During nuclear tests in 1962, EMP disruptions were suffered aboard KC-135 photographic aircraft flying from the Bluegill Triple Prime and Kingfish detonations ( burst altitude, respectively ) but the vital aircraft electronics were far less sophisticated than today and the aircraft were able to land safely.

If one compares explosions with different yields, the EMP at a fixed distance from a nuclear weapon would not increase at the same rate as the explosion yield, but at most only as the square root of the yield ( see the illustration to the right ).

For high-altitude nuclear explosions, this means that much of the EMP is actually generated at a large distance from the detonation ( where the gamma radiation from the explosion hits the upper atmosphere ).

This causes the electric field from the EMP to be remarkably uniform over the large area affected.

In other words, the electric field strength in the entire area that is affected by the EMP will be fairly uniform for weapons with a large gamma ray output ; but for much smaller weapons, the electric field may fall off at a comparatively faster rate at large distances from the detonation point.

Within the range of gamma ray deposition, simple laws no longer hold as the air is ionised and there are other EMP effects, such as a radial electric field due to the separation of Compton electrons from air molecules, together with other complex phenomena.

In addition to the large difference in the energy density of the initial energy source, the electromagnetic pulse from NNEMP weapons must come from within the weapon itself, while nuclear weapons generate EMP as a secondary effect, often at great distances from the detonation.

During the Hardtack Teak test in 1958 observers noted the damaging effects of the electromagnetic pulse ( EMP ) caused by the explosions on electronic equipment, and during the Starfish Prime test in 1962 the EMP from a 1. 4 Mt warhead detonated over the Pacific damaged three satellites and also disrupted power transmission and communications across the Pacific.

The 05 – 06 school year also introduced a new event called The Experience Moyer Project ( EMP ), which featured musical talent from the hall as well as a variety of other activities.

A Faraday cage doesn't offer protection from the effects of EMP unless the mesh is designed to have holes no bigger than the smallest wavelength emitted from a nuclear explosion.

The Experience Music Project ( EMP ) in Seattle Center is one of the few major institutions anywhere specifically devoted to popular music.

EMP was also the site of the demo and concert program for the first international conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression ( NIME-01 ) and the Pop Conference, an annual gathering of academics, critics, musicians and music buffs.

The first exhibit at the complex to bring together both music and science fiction in a single exhibit, Sound and Vision draws on the EMP Museum's collections of oral history recordings.

Horvitz has also composed and produced music for a variety of video, film, television and other multimedia projects, including two projects with director Gus Van Sant, a full length score for PBS's Chihuly Over Venice, and two films about the creation of Seattle ’ s EMP museum.

Although EMP has scaled back its live music programming from the level of its first few years, every April since 2002 it has hosted the three-day Pop Conference, which brings together a few hundred people for a unique conference that presents the perspectives of academics, writers, artists, and fans.

The intermodal traffic includes interchanged shipments with CSX and Norfolk Southern, participation in EMP container service operated by UP and Norfolk Southern, United Parcel Service ( UPS ) piggyback trailers, trailers going to the Wal-Mart distribution center at Fort Pierce, and intermodal shipping container traffic through the ports of Miami, Port Everglades ( adjacent to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and the principal source of imports ), Port of Palm Beach / Lake Worth Inlet, and Port Canaveral.
