The Egyptian Armed Forces are the largest in Africa, and the Arab World, and is the 10th largest in the world, consisting of the Egyptian Army, Egyptian Navy, Egyptian Air Force and Egyptian Air Defense Command.

The Egyptian Air Force or EAF is the aviation branch of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

The Egyptian Air Defense Command or ADF ( Quwwat El Diffaa El Gawwi in Arabic ) is Egypt's military command responsible for air defense.

Nasser personally took over command of the military and, aware that he was unable to stop the invasion, he coordinated with King Saud to land Egyptian Air Force planes in Saudi Arabia and Sudan to avoid destruction.

A series of coordinated attacks by these Egyptian Expeditionary Force infantry and mounted troops were also successful at the Battle of Mughar Ridge, during which the British infantry divisions and the Desert Mounted Corps drove two Ottoman armies back to the Jaffa — Jerusalem line.

The Treaty allows monitoring of Sinai by the Multinational Force and Observers, and limits the number of Egyptian military forces in the peninsula.

Following the Suez Crisis in 1956, Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, a leader of the Free Officers Movement, agreed to allow the United Nations Emergency Force to establish itself in the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip, causing the expulsion of all guerrilla or " fedayeen " forces there — including Arafat.

In the 1948 Arab – Israeli War, Majdal was the forward position of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force based in Gaza.

Work has been found recently in tombs, Egyptian frescoes, pottery and metalwork.
