This work should not be confused with the surviving Epistle of Barnabas, which may have been written in 2nd century Alexandria.

By the early 200s, Origen may have been using the same twenty-seven books as in the Catholic New Testament canon, though there were still disputes over the canonicity of the Letter to the Hebrews, Epistle of James, II Peter, II John and III John and the Book of Revelation, known as the Antilegomena.

" Can you be ignorant ," writes Julius, " that this is the custom, that we should be written to first, so that from here what is just may be defined " ( Epistle of Julius to Antioch, c. xxii ).

He may also have printed Burlington Gate ( 1731 ), evoked by Alexander Pope's Epistle to Lord Burlington, and defending Lord Chandos, who is therein satirized.

Long books or those that contain much material either for theological or historical-critical speculation such as Genesis, Psalms may be split over 2 or 3 volumes as a matter of course, some, such as the or the Four Gospels may be multiple-or single-volume, while short books such as the deuterocanonical portions of Daniel, Esther, and the Jeremiah ( i. e. Book of Susanna, Prayer of Azariah, Bel and the Dragon, Additions to Esther, Baruch and the Epistle of Jeremiah ), or the Pastoral or Johannine epistles are often condensed into one volume.

Even passages that do not use the term ἐκκλησία may refer to the church with other expressions, as in the first 14 chapters of the Epistle to the Romans, in which ἐκκλησία is totally absent but which repeatedly uses the cognate word κλήτοι ( klētoi, " called ").

Valentinus ' Christology may have posited the existence of three redeeming beings, but Jesus while on Earth had a supernatural body which, for instance, " did not experience corruption " by defecating, according to Clement: there is also no mention of the account of Jesus's suffering in First Epistle of Peter, nor of any other, in any Valentinian text.

The Second Epistle of Pope Callistus section 6 contains a quote that may be from John 8: 11-" Let him see to it that he sin no more, that the sentence of the Gospel may abide in him: “ Go, and sin no more .”" However the epistle quotes from eighth century writings and is not thought to be genuine.

In some instances he may be shown with a scroll or a book ( the Epistle of Jude ) or holding a carpenter's rule.

For example, Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians may be written as " I Corinthians ", using the Roman numeral " I " rather than the Arabic numeral " 1 ".

The literary theme of Homo novus, or " how the lowly born but inherently worthy man may properly rise to eminence in the world " was the topos of Seneca's influential Epistle XLIV.

In the Epistle of Paul to Titus, Paul appears to support the servitude of slaves: " Tell slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect ; they are not to talk back, not to pilfer, but to show complete and perfect fidelity, so that in everything they may be an ornament to the doctrine of God our Savior.

His unsuccessful works include Ruins of Rome, The Fleece, Country Walk, An Epistle To A Friend In Town, To Aurelia and The Enquiry.

Examples of surviving portions of his works include: the Shabuhragan ( Middle Persian ), the Book of Giants ( numerous fragments in many languages ), the Fundamental Epistle ( quoted in length by Saint Augustine ), a number of fragments of his Living Gospel ( or Great Gospel ), a Syriac excerpt quoted by Theodore Bar Konai, and his Letter to Edessa contained in the Cologne Mani-Codex.

These include the Epistle of Barnabas, the Shepherd of Hermas and the Epistles of Clement, as well as the Didache.

Rome had a large congregation early in the apostolic period whom Paul the Apostle addressed in his Epistle to the Romans, and according to tradition Paul was martyred there.

It does not appear that St. Paul had visited this city when he wrote his Epistle to the Colossians (, ), since he tells Philemon of his hope to visit it upon being freed from prison ( see Philemon 1: 22 ).

The Eastern Orthodox books included in the Old Testament are the seven deuterocanonical books listed above, plus 3 Maccabees and 1 Esdras ( also included in the Clementine Vulgate ), while Baruch is divided from the Epistle of Jeremiah, making a total of 49 Old Testament books in contrast with the Protestant 39-book canon.

The book also shares a number of passages with the Epistle of Jude, 1: 5 with Jude 3 ; 1: 12 with Jude 5 ; 2: 1 with Jude 4 ; 2: 4 with Jude 6 ; 2: 5 with Jude 5 ; 2: 6 with Jude 7 ; 2: 10-11 with Jude 8-9 ; 2: 12 with Jude 10 ; 2: 13-17 with Jude 11-13 ; 2: 18 with Jude 16 ; 3: 2f with Jude 17f ; 3: 3 with Jude 18 ; 3: 14 with Jude 24 ; and 3: 18 with Jude 25.

Clement's only existing, genuine text is a letter to the Christian congregation in Corinth, often called the First Epistle of Clement or 1 Clement.
