The Central Air Data Computer is the integrated flight control system used in the early versions of the US Navy's F-14 Tomcat fighter.

Following the retirement of the F-14 by the US, the weapon's only current operator is Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force.

Both the F-14 Tomcat and AIM-54 Phoenix missile continue in the service of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, although the operational abilities of these aircraft and the missiles are questionable, since the US refused to supply spare parts and maintenance after the 1979 revolution ; except for a brief period during the Iran-Contra Affair.

* August 19 – Two United States Navy F-14 Tomcats of Fighter Squadron 41 ( VF-41 ) aboard the aircraft carrier shoot down two Sukhoi Su-22s ( NATO reporting name " Fitter ") of the Libyan Air Force over the Gulf of Sidra 60 nautical miles ( 111 km ) off the coast of Libya using AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.

The United States Government maintains that the cruisers crew believed the airliner was a threatening Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force F-14 Tomcat ; the Government of Iran argues that the ships crew shot the airliner down deliberately and unlawfully.

* January 4 – Two United States Navy F-14 Tomcats of Fighter Squadron 32 ( VF-32 ) aboard the aircraft carrier shoot down two Libyan Air Force Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23s ( NATO reporting name " Flogger ") off the coast of Libya using AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.

According to the United States Government, the crew identified the Iranian Airbus A300 as an attacking F-14 Tomcat fighter ( a plane made in the United States and operated at that time by only two forces worldwide, the United States Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force ).

At the Naval Air Test Center Patuxent River, Maryland, from May 1971 to July 1973, he was assigned to the Weapons Systems Test Division and involved in initial F-14 Tomcat developmental test and evaluation as Project Officer for Inertial Navigation and Avionics Systems.

Gardner's next assignment was with the first operational F-14 squadron ( VF-1 ) at Naval Air Station Miramar, California, from where he flew in the Tomcat and participated in two Western Pacific and Indian Ocean cruises while deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

On 3 July 1988, USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655, an Airbus A300B2, over the Strait of Hormuz after mistaking it for an Iranian F-14.

On the night of 10 October 1985, there were tense hours on NAS II when the Italian Carabinieri, Italian Air Force, and the American Navy SEALs came close to firing upon one another following the interception by Navy F-14 Tomcat fighters of an Egyptian Boeing 737 airliner carrying the hijackers of the Italian cruise ship, the Achille Lauro, which had been commandeered by members of the PLO on 7 October.

Upon the Navy's integration of women in combat in 1993, LT Hultgreen was selected to be among the first female pilots to undergo F-14 Tomcat training at Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego.

The AWG-9 radar system carried by the F-111B and F-14 Tomcat was one of largest and most powerful ever fitted to a fighter.
