The Battle of Pharsalus ended the wars of the First Triumvirate.

This informal alliance, known as the First Triumvirate (" rule of three men "), was cemented by the marriage of Pompey to Caesar's daughter Julia.

The Lucca Conference renewed the First Triumvirate and extended Caesar's governorship for another five years.

From his first appearance in the Senate, Brutus aligned with the Optimates ( the conservative faction ) against the First Triumvirate of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and Gaius Julius Caesar.

The First Triumvirate ( 1811 – 1812 ), influenced by Bernardino Rivadavia and Manuel García, instead promoted unrestricted trade with Britain.

Unlike the earlier First Triumvirate, the Second Triumvirate was an official, legally established institution, whose overwhelming power in the Roman state was given full legal sanction and whose imperium maius outranked that of all other magistrates, including the consuls.

Like the First Triumvirate, the Second Triumvirate was ultimately unstable and could not withstand internal jealousies and ambitions.

The First Triumvirate was the political alliance of Gaius Julius Caesar, Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus.

Unlike the Second Triumvirate, the First Triumvirate had no official status whatsoever ; its overwhelming power in the Roman Republic was strictly unofficial influence, and was in fact kept secret for some time as part of the political machinations of the Triumvirs themselves.
