They published their results in three reports: The Five Gospels ( 1993 ), The Acts of Jesus ( 1998 ), and The Gospel of Jesus ( 1999 ).

Their methodology, which was developed by a team of scholars ( who expounded papers for the review of other Fellows and published many in Forum ) and is explained in The Five Gospels ( the four canonical gospels plus the Gospel of Thomas ), involves canvassing the records of the first four centuries for traditions about Jesus and sifting them by criteria such as multiple attestation, distinctiveness, and orality.

The Five Gospels says that the non-apocalyptic view gained ground in the 1970s and 1980s when research into Jesus shifted out of religious environments and into secular academia.

The apocalyptic elements attributed to Jesus, according to The Five Gospels, come from John the Baptist and the early Christian community ( p. 4 ).

Karl Barth and Rudolf Bultmann repudiated the quest for historical Jesus, and although the introduction of The Five Gospels asserts this it suppressed any real interest in the topic from c 1920 to c 1970, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church says there was a brief New Quest movement in the 50s conducted by Bultmann's students, and the search continued without break outside of the Bultmann school.

Different Buddhist traditions adhere to other lists of precepts that have some overlap with the Five Precepts.

Chapter Five departs from the organization and content of the preceding four in that it consists mostly of anonymous sayings structured around numerical lists, several of which have no direct connection with ethics.
