The state was formed by secession from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830, whose neutrality and integrity was protected by the Treaty of London 1839 ; thus it served as a buffer state between the European powers France, Prussia ( after 1871 the German Empire ), the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of the Netherlands until World War I. Belgium is divided between the Flemings in the north and the French-speaking or the German-speaking population in the south.

As a result, for the first time the English-speaking population of Canada West surpassed the French-speaking population of Canada East, tilting the representative balance of power.

Altogether up to 15, 000 Huguenots alone made new homes in the Brandenburg region, some 6, 000 of these in its capital, Berlin ( indeed, by 1700 and for a while afterwards as much as 20 % of Berlin ’ s population was French-speaking ).

In North America, France's future as a colonial power there was effectively ended with the ceding of New France to Britain ( leaving a sizeable French-speaking population under British control ) and Louisiana to Spain.
