The Synod of Dort ( 1618 – 19 ) was called by the States General to consider the Five Articles of Remonstrance.

Along with his colleague the Archbishop of York he chairs the General Synod and sits or chairs many of the church's important boards and committees ; power in the church is not highly centralised, however, so the two archbishops can often lead only through persuasion.

Among other things the General Synod agreed that the Book of Common Prayer was to ' be regarded as the authorised standard of worship and doctrine in this Church ...'.

The Anglican Church of Canada developed its first Book of Common Prayer separately from the English version in 1918, which received final authorization from General Synod in 1922.

General Synod gave final authorization to the revision in 1962, to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.

Several scholars, including Susannah Heschel, Gavin I Langmuir and Uriel Tal the General Synod has affirmed that " the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ is for all and must be shared with all including people from other faiths or of no faith and that to do anything else would be to institutionalize discrimination ".

At the national level is the General Synod which directs areas of common interest, such as theological education, ministry training and ecumenical co-operation.

The Lutheran Synod also has representatives in the General Synod.

The General Synod is the title of the governing body of some church organizations.

In the Church of England, the General Synod, which was established in 1970 ( replacing the Church Assembly ), is the legislative body of the Church.

The United Church of Christ in the United States also calls their main governing body a General Synod.

The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church has as its highest Church court the General Synod.

The ARP General Synod meets yearly ( in recent years, it has, almost without exception, been held at Bonclarken ).

The delegates to the General Synod of the ARP Church are the elder representatives elected from each church's Session and all ministers from all presbyteries that comprise the Church ( excluding ministers and elders from the independent ARP Synods of Mexico and Pakistan ).

In the North American Lutheran tradition, General Synod refers to a church body which existed from 1820-1918.

The General has attended the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama ; the U. S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania ; and the Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
