Now, if any part of the Bible is assuredly the very Word of God speaking through His servant, it is John's Gospel.

This belief is grounded in the Gospel of John passage “ You heard me say, ‘ I am going away and I am coming back to you .’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

On the other hand, they may not preside over Adoration or Benediction, give a speech that is a homily, or read the Gospel during a Mass or serve as instituted acolytes, a ministry which is now reserved for those preparing for ordained service ).

It is said to be that the author of the Gospel of Luke is the same as the author of the Acts of the Apostles.

The question regarding the genre of Acts is complicated by the fact that it was written by the same author as the Gospel of Luke.

Evidence for this is found in the prologue to the Gospel of Luke, wherein the author alludes to his sources by writing, " Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

“ Acts, then is a continuation of the Lucan Gospel, not in the sense that it relates what Jesus continued to do, but how his followers carried out his commission under the guidance of his Spirit .” Thus, part of the answer to the purpose of Acts is that Luke is writing to Theophilus, who is also mentioned in Luke 1: 3, in order to explain to him the occurrences that take place in the church that fulfill Jesus ’ promise to his disciples that “ you will be baptized with, the Holy Spirit not many days from now ” ( Acts 1: 5 ).

Prayer is a major motif in both the Gospel of Luke and Acts.

After the last anointing, the Gospel Book is opened and placed with the writing down upon the head of the one who was anointed, and the senior priest reads the " Prayer of the Gospel ".

Article 25 of the Thirty-Nine Articles, speaking of the sacraments, says: " Those five commonly called Sacraments, that is to say, Confirmation, Penance, Orders, Matrimony, and extreme Unction, are not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel, being such as have grown partly of the corrupt following of the Apostles, partly are states of life allowed in the Scriptures ; but yet have not like nature of Sacraments with Baptism, and the Lord's Supper, for that they have not any visible sign or ceremony ordained of God.

By the time the Gospels of Luke and Matthew were written, Jesus is portrayed as being the Son of God from the time of birth, and finally the Gospel of John portrays him as the pre-existent Word () as existing " in the beginning ".

Due to recorded predictions of the destruction of the temple, the Gospel of Mark is believed by many critical scholars to have been composed around or shortly after the fall of Jerusalem due to prophecies assumed to be ex post facto regarding the destruction of the temple, and both traditional and critical scholarly consensus maintains that it was the first written of the four canonical gospels.

The author opens with a prologue, usually taken to be addressed to an individual by the name of Theophilus ( though this name, which translates literally as " God-lover ", may be a nickname rather than a personal appellation ) and references " my earlier book "— almost certainly the Gospel of Luke.

This is addressed in the Gospel of Matthew's account, which portrays John's refusal to baptize Jesus, saying, " I need to be baptized by you.

* Theophilus ( biblical ) — the name of a person or an honorary title to whom the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles is addressed

Likewise, some ( but not all ) modern scholars hold that the Fourth Gospel was addressed to a group of Jewish Christians, and, very possibly, a group living in Judea.

The letter, addressed to one Theodore, discusses a Secret Gospel of Mark and quotes two excerpts from this gospel, one of which mentions " the mystery of the kingdom of God.

Modern scholars maintain that since the Gospel of John was addressed to Jewish Christians of the time, it isn ’ t likely that the evangelist would mention a place that did not exist.

In Durban, South Africa in 1951 he addressed meetings sponsored by the Apostolic Faith Mission, the Assemblies of God, the Pentecostal Holiness Church, and the Full Gospel Church of God.

"; the proper Latin quotation Credo quia absurdum est, is from the Christian apologist Tertullian ( c. 160 – c. 220 AD ), who rejected rationalism and accepted a Gospel which addressed itself to the " non-rational levels of perception.

In other words, it is those who have been spiritually quickened to seek a Saviour and not those who are in the death of unbelief and indifference, to whom the exhortations of the Gospel must be addressed.

A growing belief points to this person as the person to whom the Gospel of Luke is addressed.

Oxyrhynchus 654 had a heading which seems to describe the work as a collection of " sayings " addressed to Thomas and some other disciple, and when the Nag Hammadi Gospel of Thomas was discovered in 1945, it was identified as a Coptic version of the Greek work of which these two were fragments.

Theophilus is the name or honorary title of the person to whom the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles are addressed ( Luke 1: 3, Acts 1: 1 ).

Likewise the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Peter, and Gospel of James are not addressed to any particular gender, or any specific person.

The composer of the Gospel of John seemed interested in maintaining the internal anonymity of the author's identity.

Raymond E. Brown and others find that the author may have been acquainted with the synoptic gospels and even with the Gospel of John ; Brown ( The Death of the Messiah ) even suggests that the author's source in the canonical gospels was transmitted orally, through readings in the churches, i. e. that the text is based on what the author remembers about the other gospels, together with his own embellishments.

The poem is based, not directly on the New Testament, but on the pseudo-Tatian's Gospel harmony, and it demonstrates the author's acquaintance with the commentaries of Alcuin, Bede, and Rabanus Maurus.

By noting the differences between Jeshu's sayings as they are recorded in the Gospel of Mark and in Matthew, Miller attempted to decode the author's agenda and to recover the original meaning of Jeshu's sayings.

Although the Gospel survives in anonymous form, it is considered that the name was known to the addressee, Theophilus.

A minority argument for a date between AD 37 and AD 61 for the Gospel typically suggests that Luke's address to " Most Excellent Theophilus ," may be a reference to the Roman-imposed High Priest of Israel between AD 37 and AD 41, Theophilus ben Ananus.

Although Theophilus cites the opening of the Gospel of St. John ( 1: 1 ), he does not speak of the incarnation of the Word in the person Jesus of Nazareth.

As Titus Flavius Sabinus, Theophilus is given a crucial role in the historical novel The Flames of Rome by Paul Maier, where he is given the dedication of the " Gospel of Luke " and " Acts of the Apostles " by Luke the Evangelist.
