Petroglyph rock art and ancestral ceremonial grounds are located inside the park.

Petroglyph maps may show trails, symbols communicating time and distances traveled, as well as the local terrain in the form of rivers, landforms and other geographic features.

Petroglyph National Monument protects a variety of cultural and natural resources including five volcanic cones, hundreds of archeological sites and an estimated 24, 000 images carved by Ancestral Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers.

The numerous petroglyphs found at Petroglyph Beach just north of Wrangell, as well as those scattered on the beaches of the many islands in the vicinity, attest to the long Tlingit occupation.

Petroglyph Point was created about 275, 000 years ago when cinders erupted through the shallow water of Tule Lake ; violent explosions of ash and steam formed layers upon layers of tuff.

Lava Beds National Monument includes Petroglyph Point, one of the largest panels of Native American rock art in the United States.

The Ometepe Petroglyph Project was a volunteer field survey of the Maderas half of Ometepe from 1995 – 1999.

Of the 73 sites surveyed by the Ometepe Petroglyph Project, petroglyphs were recorded at all but one.

The Ometepe Petroglyph project is an interesting example of modern technology assisting in the recording of archaeological sites.

Today the greater Grass Lake area includes the Village of Grass Lake, Grass Lake Township, and parts of the Waterloo Recreational Area north of I-94.

The Iron Range Off Highway Vehicle Recreational Area consists of of land with of trails.

The Hanging Rock Recreational Area and the Hanging Rock Ponds are located near the village.

Two historic sites in Hanover Township are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the David Littell House, a nineteenth-century farmhouse, and the Recreational Demonstration Area part of Raccoon Creek State Park, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.

The city is also home to the Viking Recreational Area, which includes a golf course, campground, bar and grill, and a shooting range.

During the night of June 10 – 11, 2010 a flash flood along Little Missouri killed at least eighteen people in the campgrounds of the Albert Pike Recreational Area.

Following the Mount Bailey Trail, part of the Diamond Lake Recreational Area, hikers can see " panoramas to the northeast of Diamond Lake and Bailey's dizzying avalanche bowl ".

Folsom Lake covers and is located inside the Folsom Lake State Recreational Area.

Tourism plays an important role in Camuy's economy due in part to the Rio Camuy Caves, La Cueva de Camuy Recreational Area and Camuy's public beaches.

Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park / Wanapum Recreational Area is a state park at Vantage, Washington including 27, 000 feet ( 8. 2 kilometers ) of freshwater shoreline on the Wanapum Reservoir on the Columbia River.
