While King Vishnuvardhana and his descendants were Vaishnava by faith, records show that the Hoysalas maintained religious harmony by building as many temples dedicated to Shiva as they did to Vishnu.

With the decline of the Chalukya empire, their feudatories, the Hoysalas of Halebidu, Kakatiyas of Warangal, Seuna Yadavas of Devagiri, and a southern branch of the Kalachuri, divided the vast Chalukya empire amongst themselves around the middle of 12th century.

While the Hoysalas introduced innovative features into their architecture, they also borrowed features from the earlier great builders of Karnata like the Kadambas, Western Chalukyas.

While the Hoysalas had the services of great architects and sculptors, some names stand out in their history.

When the power of Chola declined due to the rise of Hoysalas and western Chalukyas, the venad ( Travancore ) Chief tains ( the decondants of central Chera's family ) took advantage of the situation and gradually established their hold on considerable areas in Nanjilnadu.

To commemorate his celebrated military conquests over the Chalukyas, their subordinates and feudatories like the Hoysalas, Nolamba Pallavas, Uchhangi Pandyas etc., the Paramaras or Maharashtra / Gujarat area, Palas of Bengal, Ilam, Madurai and the Cheras as well as his famed northern campaign to the Ganges, Rajendra assumed the title of Gangaikonda Cholan and other famous titles like Mudigondasozhan, Irattapadikonda Sozhan among scores of other titles of his and had the Siva Temple Gangaikondacholapuram built and consecrated.

It exposed their weaknesses and allowed the Hoysalas, Kalachuris, Eastern Gangas and the Kakatiyas to eventually overrun them.

Hindu temples began as simple shrines housing a deity and by the time of the Hoysalas had evolved into well articulated edifices in which worshippers sought transcendence of the daily world.

The Hoysalas built Jain temples to satisfy the needs of its Jain population, a few of which have survived in Halebidu containing icons of Jain tirthankaras.

Their influence is seen in other temples built by the Hoysalas as well.

As regards Gangavadi, Kannada records themselves speak of the Hoysalas under Vishnuvardhana suffering losses after his conquest of Gangavadi and Nolambavadi in Kannada country, which brought him into direct conflict both with the Cholas as well as the Western Chalukyas under Vikramaditya VI, who was the overlord of the Hoysalas, and of the subsequent loss of southern and eastern parts of Gangavadi coming back to the Cholas, who further embellished the Narasimha and Vishnu temples at Melkote and further expanded the Siva temple at Talakkad.

Archeological study of these temples show some have the stellar ( multigonal ) plan later to be used profusely by the Hoysalas of Belur and Halebidu.

Though Rajendra III suffered another defeat at the hands of Vira Someshwara, because of the growing power of Pandiyans being felt by both Cholas and Hoysalas, there was a political affinity between the two which was cemented also by marital relations.

Images of Harihara ( also known as Sambhu-Visnu and Sankara-Narayana, variants of the names of the two gods ) began to appear in the classical period after sectarian movements, which elevated one god as supreme over the others, had waned sufficiently for efforts at compromise to be attempted. The region of Harihar had been under the control of the Hoysalas from 11th to 13th Century AD.

Prominent dynasties of this time include the Cholas ( 3rd c. BC to 12th c. AD ), Chalukyas ( 6th to 12th c .), Rashtrakutas ( 753 – 982 ), Hoysalas ( 10th to 14th c .), Kakatiya ( 1083 CE to 1323 CE ) and Vijayanagara Empire ( 1336 – 1646 ).

Unfortunately for Rajendra III, the Hoysalas had lost any claim to regional power in Kannada and the Tamil countries, as they had been wiped out of Tamizhagam and indeed lost territories inside Kannada country itself to Jatavarman Sundara Pandiyan.

This tradition began in the 7th century under the patronage of the Chalukya dynasty of Badami, developed further under the Western Chalukyas of Basavakalyan in the 11th century and finally transformed into an independent style by the 12th century during the reign of the Hoysalas.

The artistry of the Hoysalas in stone has been compared to the finesse of an ivory worker or a goldsmith.

Halebidu was the 12th century capital of the Hoysalas.

During this time, South Indian dynasties such as the Kadambas, the Gangas, the Cholas, the Chalukyas, the Rastrakutas, the Hoysalas, the Vijaynagar Rayas and the Wodeyars of Mysore ruled over Kodagu.

Empires in Southern India included those of the Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas, the Hoysalas, the Cholas and the Vijayanagara Empire.

Bhillama V who was one of the powerful Yadava rulers led victorious campaigns against the Hoysalas, Paramaras and Chalukyas founded the city of Deogiri and shifted his capital here.

The marital alliance of Kulothunga III and one of his successors, Raja Raja III, with the Hoysalas did not yield any advantage, though ( initially, at least ) Kulothunga III took the help of the Hoysalas in countering the Pandiyan resurgence.

However, his strength rested on support from Hoysalas, whose king Veera Ballala II was his son-in-law.
