For several decades from the 1970s to early 2000s, the focus in designing high performance general purpose CPUs was largely on achieving high ILP through technologies such as pipelining, caches, superscalar execution, out-of-order execution, etc.

In Britain, the democratic socialist tradition was represented in particular by the William Morris ' Socialist League, and in the 1880s by the Fabian Society, and later the Independent Labour Party ( ILP ) founded by Keir Hardie in the 1890s, of which George Orwell would later be a prominent member.

He was elected to parliament in 1891 and two years later helped to create the Independent Labour Party ( ILP ).

" Although ILP meetings were eventually permitted, the episode was a strain on Pankhurst's health and caused loss of income for their family.

Hardie spent the next five years of his life building up the Labour movement and speaking at various public meetings ; he was arrested at a woman's suffrage meeting in London, but the Home Secretary, concerned about arresting the leader of the ILP, ordered his release.

The Independent Labour Party ( ILP ) was a socialist political party in Britain established in 1893.

The ILP was affiliated to the Labour Party from 1906 to 1932, when it voted to leave.

From its beginning, the ILP was never a homogeneous unit, but rather attempted to act as a " big tent " party of the working class, advocating a rather vague and amorphous socialist agenda.

' The socialism of the ILP was ideal for achieving this end ; lacking as it did any real theoretical basis it could accommodate practically anything a trade unionist was likely to demand.

In the 1890s the ILP was lacking in alliances with the trade union organisations.

The ILP played a central role in the formation of the Labour Representation Committee in 1900, and when the Labour Party was formed in 1906, the ILP immediately affiliated to it.

Still, the relationship between the ILP and the Labour Party was characterised by conflict.

Many ILP members viewed the Labour Party as being too timid and moderate in their attempts at social reform, detached as it was from the socialist objective during its first years.

Following the termination of World War I in November 1918, the Second International was effectively relaunched and the question of whether the ILP should affiliate with this renewed Second International or some other international grouping loomed large.

It was becoming clearer that the ILP was diverging further away from the Labour Party and at the 1931 ILP Scottish Conference the issue of whether the party should still affiliate to Labour was discussed.

( The POUM was the ILP's sister party in the " Three-and-a-Half International " of democratic socialist parties, which the ILP administered and Fenner Brockway chaired for most if its existence in the 1930s.

In one such by-election in Cardiff, this was with the result that Fenner Brockway, the ILP candidate, found himself opposed by a Conservative candidate for whom the local Communist Party actively campaigned.

The key movements within the Two and a Half International were the ILP and the Austromarxists, and the main forces in the Three and a Half International were the ILP and the Workers ' Party of Marxist Unification ( POUM ) of Spain.

They were particularly active in supporting the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War, and around twenty-five members and sympathisers ( including George Orwell ) went to Spain to assist the Workers ' Party of Marxist Unification ( POUM ) as part of an ILP Contingent of volunteers.

Membership in the new group was quickly ratified by the ILLA, the KPO, POUM, PSOP, the ILP and the Archaio-Marxists.

Fenner Brockway, ILP leader, was chairman of the Bureau for most of this period, while in 1939, Julian Gorkin of the POUM became its secretary.

Most critics and viewers noted the similarity between the story narrated in this film and George Orwell's book Homage to Catalonia, in which the author wrote one of the more famous accounts of the war, that of his own experience as a volunteer in the ILP Contingent, part of the POUM militia, before the POUM's suppression by the increasingly powerful Communist Party.

The ILP had begun organising volunteers in November 1936 following the return to Britain of Bob Edwards from delivering an ambulance sent by the ILP for the POUM militia.

The ILP contingent was attached to the POUM ’ s English-speaking contingent, as part of the centuria commanded by Georges Kopp.

The training received at the Barracks was notoriously short and at the end of January the ILP contingent, as the British section of the POUM militia, began their journey, stopping off at Lerida, where they were visited by the ILP's representative in Spain, John McNair, before leaving for the area surrounding Huesca on the Aragon Front on 2 February.

ILP leader John McNair arrived in Barcelona on 18 June with money and documents to organise the evacuation of the ILP contingent and was promptly arrested as a " POUM agent " but was released when he had proven his identity.

Meanwhile in Britain, the Communist Party press had been accusing both the ILP and POUM of being agents of fascism.

The situation for the members of the ILP contingent in Spain was made extremely uncomfortable by the attacks on POUM and it became more so as the Communists banned the ILP's Spanish ' brother party '.

Despite the suppression of POUM, not all of the ILP contingent returned home immediately.

In the Spanish Civil War, he led the ILP Contingent in the Workers ' Party of Marxist Unification ( POUM ) on the Aragon front.

The compiler was so robust, and so good at exposing ILP independent of the system it was targeted for, that after Multiflow closed, the compiler was licensed by many of the largest computer companies.

However, the significance of the Barcelona for the ILP lay not so much in the events themselves as in the reaction to the situation.

On the arrival of a British ILP Contingent about three weeks later, Orwell and the other English militiaman, Williams, were sent with them to Monte Oscuro.

Among those who went to Spain was Eric Blair ( better known as George Orwell ) and it is known that Fenner Brockway wrote a letter of recommendation for Blair to present to the ILP representatives in Barcelona.

As chair of the ILP Guild of Youth, he visited Barcelona in 1937, where he again met Orwell.

The local branch refused her admission on the grounds of her gender, but she eventually joined the ILP nationally.

He soon came to socialism, however, and in 1904 he joined the Barrhead branch of the Independent Labour Party ( ILP ).

He eventually joined the executive committee of the Keighley ILP in 1899 and went on to Chair the ILP 1903-06.

A deeply religious man and practising Roman Catholic, he was influenced by early Christian-socialist thinkers, and in 1907 he joined the Independent Labour Party ( ILP ).

In 1934, a small group led by Denzil Dean Harber did enter the ILP as the Bolshevik-Leninist Fraction, and formed the core of the Marxist Group which C. L. R. James joined.
