Diplomatic relations between the Egyptian and Jordanian government existed since Jordan became independent in 1946.

On April 6, 1972 the Egyptian government severed relations in protest for a Jordanian plan for federation with the West Bank, which didn't take PLO interests unto considerations.

They were severed again in 1979, this time by the Jordanian government, in protest for the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.

As of 1 February 2011, Jordanian Prime Minister Samir Rifai resigned and King Abdullah asked Marouf Bakhit, a former prime minister, to form a new more democratic government.

The Jordanian government has begun acquiring land for new rail routes.

However, in late 2010 the government announced an economic relief package and following the 2011 Jordanian protests it was decided to reduce the expected three year capital investment plan in the national railway network by 72 percent, partly to fund the relief package.
