The fervour of Swadeshi movement lead to establishing of many private banks in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district which were unified earlier and known by the name South Canara ( South Kanara ) district.

The three districts in the region are Uttara Kannada ( North Canara ) whose administrative headquarters is Karwar, Udupi district whose district headquarters is Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada ( South Canara ), whose administrative headquarters is Mangalore.
