Probably sensing the useful organizing power of Ibn Yasin's pious fervor, he was invited by the Lamtuna chieftain Yahya ibn Umar al-Lamtuni to preach to his people.

The dynasty originated amongst the Lamtuna and the Gudala, which were nomadic Berber tribes of the Sahara traversing the territory between southern Morocco, the Niger river and the Senegal river.
The chronicler al-Bakri claims a fortress " surrounded by 20, 000 palms " was built here by Yannu ibn Umar, a brother of the first Almoravid chieftans, Yahya ibn Umar al-Lamtuni and Abu Bakr ibn Umar, and marked the frontier between the dominions of the Lamtuna and the Gudala.

The western Sanhaja were divided into several tribes-the Gazzula and the Lamta in the Draa valley and the foothills of the Anti-Atlas range, further south, encamped in the western Sahara desert, were the Massufa, the Lamtuna and the Banu Warith, and most southerly of all, the Gudala ( or Judala ), in littoral Mauritania down to the borderlands of the Senegal river.
Around 1035, the Lamtuna chieftain Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Tifat ( alias Tarsina ), tried to reunite the Sanhaja desert tribes, but his reign lasted less than three years.

During the 11th century, the Sanhaja tribal confederation allied with the Lamtuna tribe to found the Almoravid dynasty.
It was near this location, at a place called Tabfarilla, that the early Almoravids suffered their first significant defeat, when the Gudala crushed an Almoravid Lamtuna army based in Azuggi and killed their leader Yahya ibn Umar in 1056.
