He argued that a person must have a " permanent interest of this kingdom " to be entitled to vote, and that " permanent interest " means owning property, which is where he and the Levellers disagreed.

It was while the leaders of the Levellers were being held in the Tower that they wrote an outline of the reforms the Levellers wanted, in a pamphlet entitled " An Agreement Of The Free People Of England " ( written on May 1, 1649 ).

The Levellers are an English rock band, founded in 1988 and based in Brighton, England.

After the defeat of the King Charles I of England in the civil war, there were a series of debates and confrontations between the Levellers, whose members were known as ' Agitators ', and the ' Grandees ' such as Sir Thomas Fairfax, Oliver Cromwell and Henry Ireton, who opposed the Agitators ' more radical proposals.

The Putney Debates were a series of discussions between members of the New Model Army – a number of the participants being Levellers – concerning the makeup of a new constitution for England.

Shortly afterwards, Cromwell attacked the " Banbury mutineers ", 400 troopers who supported the Levellers and who were commanded by Captain William Thompson.

These ranged from Royalists who wished to place King Charles II on the throne, to men like Oliver Cromwell, who wished to govern with a Parliament voted in by an electorate determined by property ownership, similar to that enfranchised before the civil war, to the Levellers, influenced by the writings of John Lilburne, who wanted parliamentary government based on an electorate constituted of every head of household ( normally though not necessarily male as was acknowledged in the Putney Debates ), through to other groups with smaller followings like the Fifth Monarchists, Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers, the Ranters, and the Society of Friends ( Quakers ).

It was the campaigns to free Lilburne from prison which spawned the movement known as the Levellers.

When some refused to accept this, because they wanted the army to adopt the Levellers ' document, they were arrested, and one of the ringleaders, Private Richard Arnold, was executed.

His funeral was the occasion for a large Leveller-led demonstration in London, with thousands of mourners wearing the Levellers ' ribbons of sea-green and bunches of rosemary for remembrance in their hats.

Of these, 5 were later pardoned, while Robert Lockyer ( or Lockier ), a former Levellers agitator, was hanged on April 27, 1649.

An example of a political protest making extensive use of humour in early modern times was the 17th century British movement, the Levellers.

In the time of the English Civil War, the Nag's Head tavern was the venue of a meeting between Henry Ireton and some of the Levellers which resulted in the production of a document called the Remonstrance of the Army which demanded the abolition of the monarchy and the trial of King Charles I.

In the 1990s New Cross club, The Venue was central to the Indie Rock and Brit Pop scenes and played host to gigs by many of their finest purveyors including Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp, Squeeze, Levellers, Cast, Shed Seven, Sleeper, Cornershop, Bluetones, Suede, PJ Harvey, Catherine Wheel, Belly, Ocean Colour Scene, Lush, Chumbawamba, Ash, Mudhoney, and Hole.
