In 2003, the United Kingdom's first toll motorway, the M6 Toll, opened in the West Midlands area to relieve the congested M6 motorway.

Suchet is vice-president of the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Trust, whose most challenging achievement to date has been securing funding ( both via an appeal and from influencing government decisions ) concerning the building of the new M6 Toll motorway where it cuts the lines of the Lichfield Canal and the Hatherton Canal, both of which the Trust wishes to see reopened.

This was further extended to meet the M6 Toll and A38 in 2005.

The section from the M1 to the M6 Toll split near Birmingham forms part of the unsigned E-road E 24 and the section from the M6 Toll and the M42 forms part of E 05.

A proposed extension to the M6 Toll known as the ' M6 Expressway ', which would have continued from the M6 Toll as far as Knutsford, at which point much of the existing M6 traffic leaves the M6 for Manchester, was abandoned in 2006 due to excessive costs, anticipated construction problems and disappointing levels of use of the M6 Toll.

Britain's longest bridge, Bromford Viaduct starts here, carrying the M6 to Junction 5, Castle Bromwich.

The first section of motorway in the UK opened in 1958 ( part of the M6 motorway ) and then in 1959 the first section of the M1 motorway.

The first trial in the UK was on the M6 J10 near Walsall in 1986.

The Preston Bypass, the UK's first motorway section, should have been numbered A6 ( M ) under the scheme decided upon, but it was decided to keep the number M6 as had already been applied.

The first motorway constructed in Great Britain was the M6 Preston Bypass, opened in 1958.

Once a notorious bottleneck on the old Galway to Dublin road, on 18 December 2009, the town was officially bypassed for the first time, when the M6 motorway opened as an upgrade to the N6.

The front of the car has a newly designed M kidney grille with an “ M6 ” badge – a homage to the first generation M6.

East Hall was demolished in the early 1970s ( while West Hall had been some 20 years previously ) and the debris was used as foundations for the first Thelwall Viaduct bridge of the M6.

Shevington has good communications via the M6 motorway which progressed through the parish in 1963 and the Manchester to Southport Line railway, with stations at Gathurst and Appley Bridge which first opened in the 1850s.

Before the opening of the toll motorway, this section of the M6 carried 180, 000 vehicles per day at its busiest point near Wolverhampton ( between the junctions with the M54 and M5 motorways ), compared with a design capacity of only 72, 000 vehicles.

From this point the road is a grade separated dual carriageway up until its junction with the A38 and M6 toll.

The section of the M42 between junctions 7A and 9 was re-built as part of the M6 Toll works and now forms the link between the M6 and the southern end of the toll road.

The M6 toll provides an alternative route to the M6 between Coleshill and Cannock, passing north of Sutton Coldfield and just south of Lichfield.

Cannock is located close to the M6, M6 toll and M54 motorways.

A long-standing debate to determine the nature of a proposed high capacity road, that would link the port of Heysham to the M6 motorway with the intention of reducing traffic congestion in the city centre, is one of the most prominent issues in local politics today.

The M6 motorway passes to the east of Lancaster, with junctions 33 and 34 to the south and north respectively.

By road the town is to the west of the M74 motorway, the main southerly link to England, which joins the M6 just north of Carlisle.

The A75 road eastbound links Dumfries to the southbound A74 ( M ), leading to the M6 motorway and Carlisle.

Also the M6 motorway serves the west of the town with Junction 27 connecting the town to the motorway, Charnock Richard Services on the M6 are located in Chorley Borough.

Of the canal north of Preston, only the section from Preston to Tewitfield near Carnforth in Lancashire is currently open to navigation for, with the canal north of Tewitfield having been severed in three places by the construction of the M6 motorway, and by the A590 road near Kendal.

This effectively ended navigation north of Tewitfield, so that when the M6 motorway was being constructed, the canal was culverted in three places, despite a local campaign for bridges to be built, so that restoration would be possible in the future.

Long term plans are being developed to reopen the section north of Tewitfield, which is still in water for, fed by Killington Reservoir between Kendal and Sedbergh adjacent to the M6 motorway: the final into Kendal are dry.

The nearest motorway junctions are Junctions 17 and 19 on the M6, and junction 1 and 27 on the M60.

In the postwar years, Rugby became well served by the motorway network, with the M1 and M6 merging close to the town.

The M6 motorway runs from junction 19 of the M1 at the Catthorpe Interchange, near Rugby via Birmingham then heads north, passing Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, Preston, Carlisle and terminating at the Gretna junction ( J45 ).

The M6 is the longest motorway in the United Kingdom and one of the busiest.
