* Mary Couts Burnett ( 1856 – 1924 ) Philanthropist
Mary Couts Burnett was the recent widow of legendary rancher, banker, and oilman Samuel Burk Burnett, but her marriage had not been pleasant.
Married in 1892, Mary Couts came to believe that her husband was trying to kill her and she sought a divorce.
She lived long enough to see construction begin on the TCU building that today bears her name, the Mary Couts Burnett Library.
In 1923, TCU received a generous donation from Mary Couts Burnett, the abused widow of a wealthy and well known Texas rancher.
One condition of the Burnett donation was that a portion of it would be used for the construction of a new library, and it was decided to build the Mary Couts Burnett Library where the school's athletic field, Clark Field, was then located.
