The Metropolitans were founded in 1880 as an independent professional team by business entrepreneur John B.

The new team took as its primary colors the blue of the Dodgers and the orange of the Giants ( which are conveniently two of the three colors on the New York City flag ), and took their name from the original 19th century New York Metropolitans club.
