The automobile dashboard, the iconic Fender Stratocaster electrical guitar, and popular telephones from the Western Electric Model 302 rotary dial to the Apple iPhone multi-touch screen are examples of effective control panels.

The 500 replaced the Dreyfuss-influenced Western Electric Model 302, introduced in 1937, and improved upon several areas of design that were problematic in the earlier models.

For example, the Model 302 utilized a porcelain-coated dial plate, with the numbers printed inside the finger holes.

In the mid-1950s, to avoid disposing of older phones, Western Electric manufactured a 500-style plastic replacement shell to update the appearance of the 302, calling it the Model 5302.

This is a 1945 Federal Telephone & Radio | FTR Model 803, a " clone " of the WE 302 using Automatic Electric components.

The Model 302 was in-plant from 1937 and was never completely retired from service.

Most of the Model 302 sets came in black, but eight other colors — ivory, bronze, silver, gold, rose, blue, green and red — were added toward the end of the phone's production run.

Beginning in August 1955 and extending into the 1960s, AT & T began remanufacturing the Model 302 as the Model 5302, with a base shell of new design ( and sometimes with a handset of new design ) which gave the set something of the appearance of a Model 500.
