One reason the Nassau Grouper fisheries are so depleted is that its huge spawning groups make easy targets for fishermen, who scoop up large numbers of reproducing fish, who then can obviously not reproduce.

The governments of the United States, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas have banned fishing for the Nassau Grouper in recent years.

The Nassau Grouper is in a very high rate decline and is at serious risk of becoming extinct.

The Nassau Grouper was placed on the World Conservation Union ’ s redlist of threatened species in 1996 and it was determined to be endangered because its population has declined by 60 % in the past 30 years.

The current population of the Nassau Grouper is estimated to be more that 10, 000 mature individuals but the population is estimated to still be decreasing.

So due to the over fishing and loss of habitat the outlook for the Nassau Grouper is not optimistic.

* 1965 – The burns and sinks 60 miles off Nassau with the loss of 90 lives.

* November 13 – The SS Yarmouth Castle burns and sinks off Nassau, with the loss of 90 lives.

About two-thirds of the population lives on New Providence Island ( the location of Nassau ), and about half of the remaining one-third lives on Grand Bahama ( the location of Freeport ).

The Nassau grouper lives in the sea, preferring to be near reefs ; it is one of the largest fish to be found around Coral Reefs.

Spearfishing has been implicated in local extinction of some species, including the Atlantic goliath grouper on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, the Nassau grouper in the barrier reef off the coast of Belize, the giant black sea bass in California, and others.

Charles Lindbergh gained sudden great international fame as the first pilot to fly solo and non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, flying from Roosevelt Airfield ( Nassau County, Long Island ), New York to Paris on May 20-May 21, 1927.

Tottenville has been the southern terminus of the Staten Island Railway since the railway was extended to the neighborhood on June 2, 1860, and today the three southernmost stations along this railway are generally regarded as part of the community ; besides the terminal station which bears the neighborhood's name ( which is the southernmost railway station in New York state ), the other two are Atlantic ( named after the defunct Atlantic Terra Cotta Co. factory nearby ) and Nassau ( referring to Nassau Smelting and Refining, the original name of the factory later taken over by Lucent Technologies ).

The MTA plans to close the Atlantic and Nassau stations, replacing them with the Arthur Kill Road station with a parking lot.

Short roadways still named Atlantic Avenue exist further east adjacent to the LIRR Main Line within Nassau County.

The termini of the combined route are the Belt Parkway and Conduit Avenue ( NY 27 ) in Ozone Park, southern Queens, and the Atlantic Beach Bridge in Lawrence, southwestern Nassau County.

However, effective January 1, 1970, the Nassau Expressway and unbuilt Cross Brooklyn Expressway, stretching from I-278 at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge east to the Atlantic Beach Bridge, was officially designated I-878 by the New York State Department of Transportation.

At the time, the portion of the Nassau Expressway from Meadow Causeway to the Seagirt Boulevard interchange was maintained by Nassau County while the section between the Seagirt Boulevard interchange and the Atlantic Beach Bridge toll barrier was maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation as NY 900V, a long reference route.
