Dayton is situated within the Miami Valley region of Ohio just north of the Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky metropolitan area.

Among the settlers was Benjamin Van Cleve, whose memoirs provide insights into the history of the Ohio Valley.

In 1797, Daniel C. Cooper had laid out the Mad River Road, the first overland connection between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dayton, opening the " Mad River Country " at Dayton and the upper Miami Valley to settlement.

In 1801, the Cane Ridge Revival in Kentucky planted the seed for a movement in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley to disassociate from denominationalism.

That the principal exportable product of the Ohio Valley was grain did not help matters, as grain was a high-volume, low-priced commodity, frequently not worth the cost of transporting it to far-away population centers ( this was a factor leading to farmers in the west turning their grains into Whiskey for easier transport and higher sales, and later the Whiskey Rebellion ).

Washington was not involved in any other major fighting on the expedition, and the British scored a major strategic victory, gaining control of the Ohio Valley, when the French abandoned the fort.

Salt was a valuable commodity, and an industry developed near salt springs in the Ohio River Valley, producing salt by evaporating brine from the springs.

In the five centuries prior to European contact, the Mississippian culture built numerous regional chiefdoms and major earthwork mounds in the Ohio Valley, such as Angel Mounds near Evansville, Indiana, as well as in the Mississippi Valley and the Southeast.

However, the city is connected to downtown Washington, D. C. ( some away ) by a continuous bike / running trail through the Alleghenies and along the Potomac Valley, known as the Great Allegheny Passage and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath.

The Mid-American Conference charter members were Ohio University, Butler University, the University of Cincinnati, Wayne University ( now Wayne State University ), and Western Reserve University, one of the predecessors to today's Case Western Reserve University.

On April 8, 2005, Austin Peay announced that it would be leaving the Pioneer Football League after the 2005 season and returning to scholarship-granting competition in 2007 with the Ohio Valley Conference in which it competes in other sports.

After Eastern Illinois joined the Ohio Valley Conference for football in 1995, Youngstown State joined in 1997 and was followed by Western Kentucky in 2001.

The Ohio Valley Conference ( OVC ) is a college athletic conference which operates in the midwestern and southeastern United States.

In 1948, the three schools joined with Louisville, Morehead State, and Evansville to form the Ohio Valley Conference.

Founded in 1909, the RMAC is the fifth oldest college athletic conference in the United States ( oldest in Division II ), surpassed only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Big Ten Conference, the Ohio Athletic Conference, and the Missouri Valley Conference.

Eight of the nine football-playing members ( Concord, Charleston, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Shepherd, West Liberty, West Virginia State, and West Virginia Wesleyan ) and one non-football playing member ( Wheeling Jesuit ) of the conference ; alongside joining a provisional D-II member from Virginia ( UVA-Wise ), and two associate Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members from Ohio ( Notre Dame and Urbana ), to form a new all-sports conference, the Mountain East Conference.

Three of the remaining non-football members ( Alderson – Broaddus, Davis & Elkins, and Ohio Valley ) accepted invitations to join the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

In 1869 and again in 1880, a group of Brethren in the Miami Valley of Ohio submitted a petition to Annual Conference pleading for a halt to liberalization and a return to traditional Brethren values.

The university has 16 athletic programs that compete in the Ohio Valley Conference and have provided 117 conference titles since 1948.

Murray State has won 23 regular season Ohio Valley Conference titles and 15 OVC Tournament titles, which is the best in the OVC.

The football program has won 8 Ohio Valley Conference titles and has produced 17 NFL players.

Wilmington is home to Wilmington College, a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference and participant in NCAA Division III sports.

However, the Mansion House Hotel was a failure, and by 1841, citizens began raising funds to purchase the hotel property with the intent of giving it to the Ohio and North Ohio Methodist Episcopal Conference of the Methodist Church for the purpose of a Methodist college.
