The Oosterscheldekering ( in English: Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier ), between the islands Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland, is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta works series of dams, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding.

The Thames Barrier is the world's second-largest movable flood barrier ( after the Oosterscheldekering in the Netherlands ) and is located downstream of central London, United Kingdom.

Major storm surge barriers are the Oosterscheldekering and Maeslantkering in the Netherlands which are part of the Delta Works project, and the Thames Barrier protecting London.

The Oosterscheldekering is sometimes referred to as the eighth Wonder of the World, and has been declared one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The Oosterscheldekering was the most difficult to build and most expensive part of the Delta works.

The nine kilometre-long Oosterscheldekering ( kering meaning barrier ) was initially designed, and partly built, as a closed dam, but after public protest huge sluice-gate-type doors were installed in the remaining four kilometres.

One should note the fact that in times of severe floods coming from the North Sea, the dam will still be able to close and serve in a similar way as the Oosterscheldekering.

The connections between the Eastern Scheldt and the neighboring Haringvliet had to be dammed to limit the effect of the salt water.

The Oosterschelde ( Eastern Scheldt ) is an estuary in Zeeland, Netherlands, between Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen on the north and Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland on the south.

Originally there were two branches from that point: the Oosterschelde ( Eastern Scheldt ) and the Westerschelde ( Western Scheldt ) but in the 19th century the river was cut off from its eastern ( actually: northern ) branch by a dyke that connects Zuid-Beveland with the mainland ( North Brabant ).

In 1850 work began on the Zuid-Beveland Canal which linked the Western Scheldt and the Eastern Scheldt across a narrow neck of land in the east of the province.

The Canal through Zuid-Beveland connects the Western and Eastern Scheldt.

The Eastern Scheldt and Veerse Meer are popular with pleasure boats.
