The Orioles of the IL won nine league championships, first in 1908, followed by a lengthy run from 1919 to 1925, and then dramatically in 1944, after they had lost their home field Oriole Park in a disastrous mid-season fire.

Starting the following game, the song ( a favorite among many fans, who appreciated its references to Wild Bill Hagy and Earl Weaver ) was only played ( along with a video featuring several Orioles stars performing the song ) after wins.

Three days later, the 22nd, in the first game of a doubleheader at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the Rangers ' bats came alive with a modern record for runs by one team, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 30 – 3.

In the Orioles ' four-game sweep of the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers, Robinson hit two home runs — in Game One, which Baltimore won 5 – 2, and in Game Four, the only run of the game in a 1 – 0 series-clinching victory.

On September 14, while in a tight three-way race for the American League Eastern Division crown with the Red Sox and Orioles, Jackson ended a game with the Red Sox by hitting a home run off Reggie Cleveland, giving the Yankees a 2 – 0 win.

The Yankees won the division by two and a half games over the Red Sox and Orioles, and came from behind in the top of the 9th inning in the fifth and final game of the American League Championship Series to beat the Kansas City Royals for the pennant.

* On the day the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles wrapped up their respective League Championship Series in 1969, a feature story on the CBS Evening News showed telecast clips of the ALCS game ( albeit with no original sound ).

* Bruce Dostal ( born 1965 ), former professional baseball player who spent four games on active roster of the Baltimore Orioles in June 1994, but never played in a Major League game.

Ripken, as a member of the Rochester Red Wings ( the Orioles Triple-A farm club at the time ), played in the longest professional baseball game.
