At one election rally, he challenged the PAP's claim to being an open and transparent government, and asked whether any investigation had been conducted as to how the former Minister for National Development, Teh Cheang Wan, had obtained the tablets with which he had committed suicide in the midst of being investigated for corruption.

The party also polled strongly in Eunos GRC again, losing to the PAP's team by 47. 6 % of the votes to 52. 4 %.

He and fellow party members Jufrie Mahmood, Neo Choon Aik and Wee Han Kim again lost narrowly to the PAP's team by 47. 6 % of the votes to 52. 4 %.

The PAP, however, were also shocked by the split-these sentiments were emphasised when PAP member Goh Keng Swee commented on the schism ( which, at the time, he clearly believed would end the PAP's dominance ) in an interview with Dennis Bloodworth:

The SDP went on to criticise the PAP's economic policies and urged for the minimum wage of S $ 5 per hour for the rest of the 2001 campaign.

The party also polled strongly in the Aljunied Group Representation Constituency, losing to the PAP's team with 43. 9 % of the vote to 56. 1 %.

On polling day, Gomez and his Workers ' Party colleagues in Aljunied GRC lost to the PAP's team by 56, 593 votes ( 43. 9 %) to 74, 843 ( 56. 1 %).

On election day, the Worker's Party's team in Cheng San GRC lost to the PAP's team by 44, 132 votes ( 45. 2 %) to 53, 553 ( 54. 8 %).

In response, The Workers ' Party quipped that its manifesto contained only time bombs which threatened the PAP's power.

The PAP's vote percentage of 75. 3 % signalled an overwhelming endorsement of the PAP to lead the nation out of the crisis that came at a time of great uncertainty over world security and the recession that came after 9 / 11.
