China and South Vietnam both occupied portions of the Paracel Islands until 1974, when the Battle of the Paracel Islands occurred ; China took over and has controlled all of the Paracel Islands since then.

On less official terms, the ROC is involved in a complex dispute for control over the Spratly Islands with the PRC, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and possibly Brunei ; and over the Paracel Islands, occupied by the PRC, but claimed by Vietnam and the ROC.

Woody Island, also known as Yongxing Island () or Phu Lam Island (), is the largest of the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.

Both the Paracel ( Hoàng Sa: Vietnamese ) ( Xīshā: Chinese ) and Spratly ( Trường Sa: Vietnamese ) ( Nansha: Chinese ) islands remain a point of contention.

Following Japan's surrender at the end of the war, the Nationalist Chinese government sent four warships to the South China Sea in 1946 to reclaim the Spratly and Paracel Islands.

In 1974, the PLA Navy secured entire the Paracel islands during the Battle of the Paracel Islands.

The PRC government claims territories of the province extend to the southern Spratly Islands, Paracel Islands, and other disputed marine territory.

In January 1974, the PLA saw action in the South China Sea following a long-simmering dispute with the Republic of Vietnam ( South Vietnam ) over the Paracel Islands.

Treaty of Taipei largely correlates itself to the terms of the Treaty of San Francisco, recognizing that in the Treaty of San Francisco ( which entered into force April 28, 1952 ) Japan renounced all right, title, and claim concerning Taiwan, the Pescadores, the Spratly Islands, and the Paracel Islands.

It lies east of the Paracel Islands, southwest of the Pratas Islands and north of the Spratly Islands.

During the Qing Dynasty, the Xuantong Emperor sent the Guangdong Navy to survey the Paracel Islands, and on the island they erected a stele and raised a flag.

There is also the traditional village politics of the Samoa Islands, the " faamatai " and the " faasamoa ", which continues in American Samoa and in independent Samoa, and which interacts across these current boundaries.

The territory is administered from Canberra by the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport, which is also responsible for the administration of the territories of Christmas Island, Cocos ( Keeling ) Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, Jervis Bay and Norfolk Island.

Kerguelen Islands ( France ; also an EU Overseas territory ) are situated in the Antarctic Convergence area, while the Falkland Islands, Isla de los Estados, Hornos Island with Cape Horn, Diego Ramírez Islands, Campbell Island, Macquarie Island, Amsterdam and Saint Paul Islands, Crozet Islands, Prince Edward Islands, and Gough Island and Tristan da Cunha group remain north of the Convergence and thus outside the Antarctic region.
