* Pelton Fell

Pelton Fell is a village in County Durham, England.

It was the site of a 19th and 20th century coal mine and a small rail station primarily used to service both Pelton Fell and a village at the opposite end of Station Lane, although very few traces of either remain today, except in some of the street names.

Pelton fell side ( north side ) and Station lane side where a beautiful park is located housing a War Memorial, tennis courts, children's play area and a bowling green, home to the Pelton Fell War Memorial Park Bowling Club.

Pelton Fell Football club play home games on the football pitches situated at the rear of Park View and Battle Green just off Station Lane.

In February 2008 Pelton Fell hit the headlines when a resident of the village, Kelly McKitten, aged 31, was murdered.

A railway line ran from the Alma Pit, behind Front Street towards the Pelton Fell landings.

Pelton has two public houses, one RAOB club and a small range of convenience stores, including a greengrocers, three general stores, a Post Office, chemist, doctors surgery, dentist, some take-away food outlets, and some hair salons.

Pelton indicated this round of layoffs was due to a " stalled lackluster economy " and noted that while the number of orders cancelled for jets has been decreasing new orders have not met expectations.

According to other captives interviewed by Robert Young Pelton for CNN, Lindh was fully aware of the planned uprising, yet remained silent and did not cooperate with the Americans.

Lester Allan Pelton ( September 5, 1829 – March 14, 1908 ) was an American inventor who contributed significantly to the development of hydropower and hydroelectric power in the old West and world-wide.

Lester Allan Pelton was born in Vermilion, Ohio on September 5, 1829.

Lester's father was Allen Pelton, Josiah's youngest son ; his mother was Fanny Cuddeback, she of another locally prominent family.

Pelton was watching a spinning water turbine when the key holding its wheel onto its shaft slipped, causing it to become misaligned.

Before Pelton, almost all water turbines were reaction machines powered by water pressure, or head, while Pelton's wheel was powered by the kinetic energy of a high velocity water-jet

In 1895, the largest installation of Pelton's wheel during his lifetime was accomplished at the North Star Mine Powerhouse, Grass Valley, California, by the engineer Arthur De Wint Foote, who designed and installed an over-sized wheel of 30 feet diameter ; it performed successfully, greatly increasing the hydropower delivered by the Pelton runners to produce compressed air for mining operations.

Pelton died in California on March 14, 1908, at age 78 ; he was buried at his family site in Vermilion, Ohio.

Therefore, Pelton wheels have only one turbine stage, unlike gas turbines that operate with compressible fluid.

The smallest Pelton wheels are only a few inches across, and can be used to tap power from mountain streams having flows of a few gallons per minute.

The original Pelton wheels were used for the generation of power and consisted of a radial flow turbine with " reaction cups " which not only move with the force of the water on the face but return the flow in opposite direction using this change of fluid direction to further increase the efficiency of the turbine.

In the late 1870s Pelton modeled, tested and manufactured his first turbine wheel, dubbed the Pelton Runner — later referring to the impulse blades only — at the Miners Foundry in Nevada City, California.

In the history of General Products this indemnity has been claimed only once, by Gregory Pelton, whose hull failed under extremely unusual circumstances ( see Flatlander ).

Limits on the turbine temperatures allow for only a 3: 1 compression ratio, and the turbine is not based on a Parsons-like " fan ", but a Pelton wheel-like arrangement.

With only a few hundred dollars in the bank, Pelton walked into the Soviet embassy in Washington, DC in January 1980 and offered to sell what he knew to the KGB for money.
