` Alexander Mackenzie `, the Royal Military College of Canada March for bagpipes, was composed in his honour by Pipe Major Don M. Carrigan, who was the College Pipe Major 1973 to 1985.

This situation continued until the 1840s, when Queen Victoria's enthusiasm for all things Highland was instrumental in the War Office's decision that each battalion of the Highland Regiments be allowed five pipers and a Pipe Major, which continues to be all that the British Army provides funds for to this day.

To be qualified as a Pipe Major or Drum Major in the pipes and drums of a regiment of the British Army, candidates must successfully pass a series of courses at the school.

Pipe Major uniform is usually different, to distinguish them from the other members of the band.

In the Novice Juvenile and Juvenile categories, band members must be under the age of eighteen, with the exception of one " adult " player, often an instructor, who may serve as the Pipe Major or Pipe Sergeant.

It was originally from the opera William Tell by Rossini, but was transcribed to the pipes in 1854 by Pipe Major John MacLeod after he heard it played by a Sardinian military band when serving in the Crimean War with his regiment, the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders.

The Major Sinclair Memorial Pipe Band is also based in the town and is regular in parades and RSPBA competitions.

By the end of the 1970s and the start of the 1980s the pipe band received its first Pipe Major, Pipe Major Jimmy Walker, which in turn helped to improve the musical talents within the pipe band.

Sadly this was not achieved until 1996 Under Pipe Major Walker's Successor, Pipe Major David Johnson who joined the Regiment and the Pipe Band from the Irish Guards in Munster in 1988.

The local band-Dunbar Royal British Legion Pipe Band-has competed with mixed success over the years.

Since 1930, when the Scottish band association ( today known as the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association ) was formed, there has been a World Pipe Band Championship competition, known as ' The Worlds ' held annually in Glasgow during August.

Pipe Bands: Lanark & District Pipe Band previously had two units which competed in competitions run by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association-one competing in grade 4b and one in grade 3a, having been upgraded from 4b to 4a to 3b to 3a in consecutive years from 2004.

One exception to this are members of the Pipe bands in the Royal Regiment of Scotland who are all members of that regiment and are fully trained infantrymen as well as musicians.

The Royal Scottish Pipe Bands Championships, Dumbarton

Held in Dumbarton since 2000, the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Championships sees over 140 bands enter yearly, including representatives from Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and Ireland.

Once the Pipe Band achieved its goal of playing at London the Military School of Piping in Scotland then started to use the Pipes and Drums more frequently thus helping the Pipe Band immensely because a young Trooper from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards joined the Regiment and the Pipe Band in 1991 to help and encourage the younger members of the band.

He Became the Pipe Major before being replaced in 2008 by the first true Queen's Royal Hussar Pipe Major, Nicolas Colwell.

Under Pipe Major Massie in 1999 the Pipe Band was requested to appear at the Royal Tournament and the Edinburgh Tattoo, he also changed the Uniforms of the Pipe Band to a Saffron Kilt with a green but gold braided Pipers jacket and a garter blue and green shawl with the White Horse of Hannover as a brooch, the drummers wearing traditional Hussars ceremonial dress.

In November 2009, the band was selected as the Scottish Pipe Band of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards.

The Los Angeles Scottish Pipe Band, or, more commonly, the LA Scots, is a pipe band located in Orange County, California.

On 3rd December 2011 Field Marshal Montgomery was named Pipe Band of the Year at the 2011 MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards.

The Regimental Pipes and Drums of the Lorne Scots is one of the oldest Pipe Bands in Canada.

The Pipes and Drums of the Lorne Scots was the first Canadian Reserve Pipe Band to play at the Edinburgh Tattoo in 1960 and again in 1970 and has performed for Her Majesty The Queen, HRH The Duke of Kent, The Duke of Argyll, Governors General, Lieutenant Governors, The Prime Minister, and various Premiers.

The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Henry Bouryng, which was dated 1302, in the " Pipe Rolls of Derbyshire ", during the reign of King Edward 1, known as " The Hammer of the Scots ", 1272-1307.

When the infant BBC Television service was started in 1936, Rediffusion, which had supplied cable radio services since 1928, started providing " Pipe TV " to its customers who had difficulties tuning into the weak TV broadcast signal.
