Place Manuel was named after the Restoration politician Jacques-Antoine Manuel ; the fountain in the centre of the square contains his image sculpted by David d ' Angers.

The cafés at the centre of Montparnasse's night-life were in the Carrefour Vavin, now renamed Place Pablo-Picasso.

Market Place and Strait Bargate are the retail hub of the town centre.

The town centre is small, basically consisting of two streets: High Street, which runs south from the Market Place towards the Townsend Retail Park, and the pedestrianised Town Street which runs north from the Market Place to Waterloo Bridge.

The town centre is fairly small with a high proportion of empty premises in Market Place and the north end of High Street adjacent to Market Place.

The centre of the old town is the huge Market Place, the largest in Germany ( 10, 000 square metres ), surrounded by elegant buildings with styles ranging from 14th-century North German Gothic to 19th-century Romanesque revival.

Amongst the other Monuments Historiques are the church of Saint-Pierre in the Place St Pierre in the centre of Saumur, and the Château de Briacé which is located on the north side of the river.

In the centre of the old town is the Place d ' Armes, in which stands the former Hôtel-de-ville, now the town hall and police offices.
