The Portsmouth and Weldon Railroad, completed in the 1830s allowed for goods to be transported from the Roanoke River to be directly transported to Weldon, and the Albemarle-Chesapeake Canal, completed in 1859, created a deeper channel for merchants shipping goods from the Eastern Albemarle Sound to Norfolk.

It goes through the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Petersburg, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Blacksburg, Tazewell, and Grundy, in Virginia ; Princeton and Bluefield in West Virginia ; and Pikeville, Kentucky, Frankfort, Kentucky.

Acquisition of other lines, including the Cincinnati, Portsmouth and Virginia Railroad ( CP & V RR ) ( which it had long supported and leased ) extended the N & W system west along the Ohio River to Cincinnati, Ohio, south from Lynchburg to Durham, North Carolina and south from Roanoke to Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The complex corporate history of the Seaboard began on March 8, 1832, when its earliest predecessor, the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad was chartered by the legislatures of Virginia and North Carolina to build a railroad from Portsmouth, Virginia, to the Roanoke River port of Weldon, North Carolina.

By 1853, the Roanoke and Gaston had connected with the Seaboard and Roanoke at Weldon, thus offering travelers through service on the 176-mile route from Portsmouth to Raleigh.

Before the American Civil War, both the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad and the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad were built through Suffolk, early predecessors of 21st century Class 1 railroads operated by CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern respectively.

From 1833 to 1836, he worked as chief engineer in charge of the construction of the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad.

From 1842 to 1846 he was president of the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad, and in 1846, he became president of the James River and Kanawha Canal Company, a position which he held until 1853, when he moved from Richmond, Virginia, to Raleigh, North Carolina.

Although railroads emerged as a new transport technology in the 1830s, and a line of the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad reached nearby Portsmouth in 1835, Norfolk was to wait 20 more years for a railroad line.

Significant development occurred after the coming of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and George D. Winn's ferry to Portsmouth, Ohio in the 1890s.

The Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad in 1871 reached Ossipee Corner, with service extended in 1875 to Center Ossipee.

When the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad arrived in 1871, the center of Wakefield shifted from Wakefield Corner to Sanbornville, which today remains the retail district of town.

In 1852, the Concord and Portsmouth Railroad established a station in Pembroke.

However, the port status declined with the completion of more railroads to the ocean harbor area of Hampton Roads, notably including the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway at Newport News and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad at Portsmouth.

On February 23, 1843, the B & M opened to Agamenticus, on the line of the Portland, Saco and Portsmouth Railroad in South Berwick.

The Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad entered Conway in 1871.

When Amtrak commenced nationwide operations on May 1, 1971, the Broadway Limited continued to use the all-PRR route, with a split at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for trains to Washington, DC via Perryville, Maryland along the former Harrisburg, Portsmouth, Mount Joy and Lancaster Railroad, Columbia and Port Deposit Railway and Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad until November 30, 1975.

It had two main branches: Blanchester to Hillsboro, which was originally part of the Hillsboro and Cincinnati Railroad ; and Hamden to Portsmouth, Ohio, originally part of the Scioto and Hocking Valley Railroad.

* B & M's Eastern Route formerly operated across the bridge at Merrimack River and as far north as Portsmouth, New Hampshire on the former Eastern Railroad of Massachusetts alignment.

* February 20-The Scioto and Hocking Valley Railroad ( which eventually was absorbed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ) is chartered in Ohio to build a railroad from Portsmouth through Piketon and Chillicothe to Lancaster.

Ocean Sound's predecessor, Radio Victory provided the first local commercial radio service in the South of England in 1975, with its small transmission area around Portsmouth.

Other important Seaboard routes included a line from Jacksonville via Tallahassee to a connection with the L & N at Chattahoochee, Florida, for through service to New Orleans ; a line to Atlanta, Georgia, and Birmingham, Alabama, connecting with the main line at Hamlet, North Carolina ; and a line from the main at Norlina, North Carolina, to Portsmouth, Virginia, the earliest route of what became the Seaboard.

A historic seaport and popular summer tourist destination, Portsmouth is served by Portsmouth International Airport at Pease, formerly the Strategic Air Command's Pease Air Force Base.

It is home to Portsmouth International Airport at Pease ( formerly Pease Air Force Base ), and to the New Hampshire National Guard.

After graduating from Portsmouth Senior High School, Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1974, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1978, and a Masters of Science degree in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology on a National Science Foundation Fellowship in 1979.

Some examples of permanent military bases used by the navies and air forces of the world are the Royal Dockyards in Portsmouth, UK, the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington State, USA, or Ramstein Air Base, Germany ( the last two are each designated as a Main Operating Base ).

Exit 1, on the border between Portsmouth and Newington, was previously an at-grade crossing with traffic lights, most likely due to the proximity of the entrance to Pease Air Force Base.

The road then travels north through Newington past Portsmouth International Airport at Pease ( formerly the Pease Air Force Base ), then merges from three to two lanes before turning northwest to cross the Little Bay Bridge over the confluence of Great Bay and the Piscataqua River.

Level C is held at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine at the Navy Remote Training Site, Rangeley, and at Naval Air Station North Island, California at the Navy Remote Training Site, Warner Springs.

He attended both Springwell Junior and Hounslow Manor Comprehensive Schools and joined the Air Training Corps, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Physiology from the University of Wales, and then completed a postgraduate course in Radio Journalism at the University of Portsmouth.

The field gun competition was contested by teams from the Royal Naval commands of Portsmouth, Devonport and the Fleet Air Arm ( although teams from Chatham and the Royal Marines have also competed ).

For some of its length, the road follows a similar line to the Portsmouth Direct Line railway, although one of the major exceptions is that the A3 does not go through or closely bypass Havant.

Today the town is served by Godalming railway station on the Portsmouth Direct Line.

Godalming railway station is on the Portsmouth Direct Line between London ( Waterloo ) and Portsmouth, and is served by South West Trains.

This reached a peak at the so-called ' Battle of Havant ', but from 1859 the new Portsmouth Direct Line was bought-out by the LSWR, providing the company with a second main line to the south coast.

A decade later, in 1876 the Portsmouth Direct Line was extended further south to reach Southsea and further west to serve the Naval Dockyard with a new station, Portsmouth Harbour.

Fareham railway station is on the West Coastway Line, with regular services to Portsmouth, Southampton, Cardiff and London.

The town was one of the rotten boroughs, but recovered with the construction of the Portsmouth Direct Line, which connected Haslemere with London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour railway stations.

It is situated on the Portsmouth Direct Line with trains running between London Waterloo and either Portsmouth harbour or Portsmouth and Southsea.

Chichester railway station, on the West Coastway Line, has regular services to Brighton, London Victoria via Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth and Southampton.

A catamaran service run by Wightlink operates from Ryde Pier to Portsmouth Harbour which connects with both Island Line trains and mainland trains to London Waterloo.

Three Bridges continues to be the site of an important rail station at the intersection of the London to Brighton line and the London to Portsmouth Line ( Arun Valley Line via Horsham ), but the branch line to East Grinstead closed on 1 January 1967.

Liphook has its own railway station, on the Portsmouth Direct Line.
