After Route 4 splits as a mostly-freeway connection to I-95, U. S. 1 becomes a lower-speed surface road, passing through Warwick, Providence, and Pawtucket.

At the Laurentian interchange, in Montreal, the Abitibi route ( Highway 66 / Route 117 / A-15 ) rejoins the main TCH line.

Directly afterward, I-97 passes over Maryland Route 450 with no interchange.
