Among the more famous species are the Sacred Fig tree ( Pipal, Bodhi, Bo, or Po, Ficus religiosa ) and the Banyan Fig ( Ficus benghalensis ).

The Buddha is traditionally held to have found bodhi ( enlightenment ) while meditating under a Sacred Fig ( F. religiosa ).

The Plaksa Pra-sravana was said to be a fig tree between the roots of which the Sarasvati River sprang forth ; it is usually held to be a Sacred Fig but more probably seems to be a Wavy-leaved Fig ( F. infectoria ).

All the native fig trees of the American continent are hermaphrodites, as well as species like Indian Banyan ( F. benghalensis ), Weeping Fig ( F. benjamina ), Indian Rubber Plant ( F. elastica ), Fiddle-leaved Fig ( F. lyrata ), Moreton Bay Fig ( F. macrophylla ), Chinese Banyan ( F. microcarpa ), Sacred Fig ( F. religiosa ) and Sycamore Fig ( F. sycomorus ).

There he sat in meditation under a peepul tree ( Ficus religiosa or Sacred Fig ), which later became known as the Bodhi tree.

The Bodhi Tree, also known as Bo ( from the Sinhalese Bo ), was a large and very old Sacred Fig tree ( Ficus religiosa ) located in Bodh Gaya ( about from Patna in the Indian state of Bihar ), under which Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher later known as Gautama Buddha, is said to have achieved enlightenment, or Bodhi.

The term " Bodhi Tree " is also widely applied to currently existing trees, particularly the Sacred Fig growing at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, which is a direct descendant planted in 288 BC from the original specimen.

The temple was built in 1669-71 by King Luang Sorasak, who was born in the village of Pho Prathab Chang, between a Banyan and a Sacred Fig.

Specific world trees include világfa in Hungarian mythology, Ağaç Ana in Turkic mythology, Modun in Mongolian mythology, Yggdrasil ( or Irminsul ) in Germanic ( including Norse ) mythology, the Oak in Slavic and Finnish mythology, and in Hindu mythology the Ashvattha ( a Sacred Fig ).

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a Sacred Fig tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

It also contains a number of exceptional trees, including a Sacred Fig which is a clone descendant of the Bodhi tree that Buddha sat under for inspiration, a sapling of which was gifted to Mary Foster by Anagarika Dharmapala in 1913.

Sacred trees and sacred groves were widely venerated by the Germanic peoples and scholars have linked this oak and others to the world tree in Norse mythology, Yggdrasil.

In some Pacific island cultures the banyan tree, of which the Bodhi tree is of the Sacred Fig variety, is the abode of ancestor spirits.

Additionally, a seal excavated in Mohenjodaro shows a Goddess-like deity seated on a Peepal ( Sacred fig ) tree.

Predation on adult frogs has been recorded for the Red-bellied Black Snake, Tiger snake, laughing kookaburra, Sacred kingfisher and it is believed that wading birds and other snakes such as the Green tree snake and the Copperhead snake are predators of the frog.
