The Shins are an American indie rock band from Albuquerque, New Mexico, formed in 1996.

The Shins began in 1997 in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a side project for singer-songwriter James Mercer, whose primary band was Flake Music.

At a San Francisco performance with Modest Mouse in 2000, Sub Pop's Jonathan Poneman asked The Shins to contribute a single to the label's Single of the Month Club, which eventually became an offer to release The Shins ' 2001 single, " New Slang ", and their debut album, Oh, Inverted World.

Two other songs from this album, (" Caring Is Creepy " and " New Slang ") were featured prominently on the soundtrack for the 2004 film Garden State, starring and directed by Zach Braff, exposing the music of The Shins to a much wider audience.

In the last two years the Smallgoods have been developing their show alongside acts like The Shins ( USA ), Ben Kweller ( USA ), Josh Rouse ( USA ), The New Folk Implosion ( USA ), The Brunettes ( NZ ), Architecture in Helsinki, The Lucksmiths, Midstate Orange and Ground Components, to name a few.

The track was included on the soundtrack for the 2004 film Garden State along with another song by The Shins (" New Slang ").

The album's cover was reenacted by the Shins on their 2001 music video for " New Slang ," along with album covers by Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, the Minutemen, Squirrel Bait, Sonic Youth and Slint.

Sub Pop has two platinum records, Nirvana's Bleach ; and Flight of the Conchords's Flight of the Conchords, as well as two gold records, The Postal Service's Give Up and The Shins ' Wincing the Night Away.

Lance Bangs ( born September 8, 1972 ) is an American filmmaker, documentarian, and music video director who has created videos for Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Green Day, the Arcade Fire, the Shins, The Thermals, Belle & Sebastian, Menomena, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, R. E. M., Mike Watt, Death Cab for Cutie, The Black Keys, Kanye West, Odd Future, and Pavement.

Hank may have been rounding up in Bobby's case since in the eighth episode of that season (" Shins of the Father "), Bobby has a birthday party.

They are often credited with taking the first steps toward popularizing grunge music, and have continued to achieve critical and commercial success in the new millennium, with popular bands such as Fleet Foxes, Dinosaur Jr., Foals, Beach House, The Postal Service, Flight of the Conchords, No Age, Wolf Parade and The Shins on their roster.

The song " We Will Become Silhouettes " was covered by The Shins and the original version was featured in the trailer for the movie Funny People.

The Shins also announced additional tour dates for their North American tour.

The " Seth Cohen Starter Pack ", which contains The Goonies DVD, a copy of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, and albums by Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, and The Shins, says a lot about his tastes and pop culture sensibilities.

He helped Louisville, Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket produce their highly acclaimed album, Evil Urges, Portland rock band Castella produce their album How Did We Get Here as well as " Wincing The Night Away " for The Shins., Australian band Augie March produce their new album Watch Me Disappear, southern Californian indie rock band, Young the Giant produce their debut album, and Big Talk, the solo effort of The Killers ' drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr, produce their debut album.

The band toured for most of 2003 including a month long stint supporting Yo La Tengo and a week supporting The Shins.

In 1997, Mercer began writing what would eventually become The Shins ' first record.

For their earliest shows, The Shins performed as a duo with Mercer recruiting Sandoval to play drums.

" and " The Past and Pending " kept The Shins ' success going into 2002, cementing Oh, Inverted World as one of the definitive indie-rock albums of the early ' 00s and The Shins as one of the genre's leading younger bands.

Dave Hernandez ( at this point living in nearby Seattle ) rejoined The Shins in 2003 playing guitar and bass.

In a Pitchfork Media interview, Mercer announced that Eric Johnson of fellow Sub Pop band Fruit Bats had joined the Shins.

The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English ( 2005 ), The Concise New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English ( 2007 ), and The Routledge Dictionary of Modern American Slang and Unconventional English ( 2008 ) give a secondary meaning as " any blind, unthinking, unquestioning follower of a philosophy.

The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English defines ' pub crawl ' as both a noun and a verb, with the noun ( dating from 1915 ) being defined as " a drinking session that moves from one licensed premises to the next, and so on ", and the verb ( 1937 ) meaning " to move in a group from one drinking establishment to the next, drinking at each.

After a year, during which half the songs on debut album Oh, Inverted World ( including " New Slang ") were penned, Hernandez left and moved to New York City.

An enhanced single release in 2004 included a live version of " New Slang " recorded with Iron and Wine, a studio mix of " Fighting in a Sack ," a multimedia tack of " So Says I ," and a cover of the Marc Bolan song " Baby Boomerang ".

The term " toothing " was included in the 2006 version of The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English.

" In addition, toothing is listed in the Sex Slang dictionary, authored by Tom Dalzell and Terry Victor, with an explanation similar to the one in the New Partridge Dictionary.

In a review of The Yale Book of Quotations ( 2006 ) by Fred Shapiro, The New Yorker critic Louis Menand observed that it was " extremely interesting to know, for instance, that the phrase ' Shit happens ' was introduced to print by one Connie Eble, in a publication identified as UNC – CH Slang ( presumably the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ), in 1983.

The album contains the songs " Caring Is Creepy " and " New Slang ," both of which appeared in the 2004 film Garden State.

In 2002, a song called " New Slang " was heard on TV commercials across the country.

The phrase " egg and spoon " features in The Concise New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English ; its use, along with the idiom good egg with which it is sometimes confused, is frowned upon by the Metropolitan Police Service on the grounds of it being derogatory and rhyming slang for " coon ".
