The Smiths members Morrissey and Johnny Marr shared an appreciation for Smith's Horses, and reveal that their song " The Hand That Rocks the Cradle " is a reworking of one of the album's tracks, " Kimberly ".

The Union Flag also became a prominent symbol of the movement, and its use as a symbol of pride and nationalism contrasted deeply with the controversy that erupted just a few years before when former Smiths singer Morrissey performed draped in it.

The Smiths were formed in early 1982 by Steven Patrick Morrissey, a writer who was a big fan of the New York Dolls and briefly fronted punk rock band The Nosebleeds ; and John Maher, a guitarist and songwriter.

In a 1984 interview Morrissey said that he chose The Smiths " because it was the most ordinary name " and because he thought that it was " time that the ordinary folk of the world showed their faces.

In July 1987, Marr left the group permanently because he thought an NME article entitled " Smiths to Split " was planted by Morrissey, when in fact it was not.

It received a lukewarm reception from critics, but both Morrissey and Marr name it as their favourite Smiths album.

In 2007 they released the documentary DVD Inside the Smiths, a surprisingly affectionate memoir of their time with the band, notable for the absence of Marr, Morrissey, and their music.

Morrissey and Marr each took 40 percent of The Smiths ' recording and performance royalties, allowing 10 percent each to Joyce and Rourke.

But Morrissey and Marr acted throughout on the basis that they would be getting 40 percent each of the net profits from The Smiths earnings.

In 2006, Morrissey declared, " I would rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths, and that's saying something for a vegetarian.

In March 2006, Morrissey revealed that The Smiths had been offered $ 5 million for a performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which he turned down, saying, " No, because money doesn't come into it.

In August 2007, it was widely reported that Morrissey had that summer declined an offer of $ 75 million – nearly £ 40 million at the time – from a " consortium of promoters " to reunite with Marr for a fifty-date world tour under the Smiths ' name in 2008 and 2009.

Morrissey and Johnny Marr dictated the musical direction of The Smiths.

In 1986, when The Smiths performed on the British music programme The Old Grey Whistle Test, Morrissey wore a fake hearing-aid to support a hearing-impaired fan who was ashamed of using one, and also frequently wore thick-rimmed National Health Service-style glasses.

Yet even while leading bands from the Britpop movement were influenced by The Smiths, they were at odds with the " basic anti-establishment philosophies of Morrissey and The Smiths ", since Britpop " was an entirely commercial construct.

In 1983 Morrissey of The Smiths stated that " there was nothing more repellent than the synthesizer ".

Through the end of 1991 and early 1992, Suede received a number of favourable mentions in the music press, garnering them slots at shows hosted by NME and attended by significant musical figures such as former Smiths singer Morrissey.

The former singer of British band The Smiths, Morrissey has also talked of his love for Elizabeth Smart.

Their sound had now evolved from simplistic punk-rock to a more mature sound resembling R. E. M., Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Smiths.

Such musical acts as Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, Neil Young, Patti Smith, Swans, The Germs, and Joy Division have been mentioned by Love, including songs by several of them being covered by Hole in live performances and, in some cases, studio recordings.

In an idea originated by the Smiths Potato Crisps Company Ltd, formed in 1920, Frank Smith originally packaged a twist of salt with his crisps in greaseproof paper bags, which were then sold around London.

Around the middle of his career, Edison attributed the hearing impairment to being struck on the ears by a train conductor when his chemical laboratory in a boxcar caught fire and he was thrown off the train in Smiths Creek, Michigan, along with his apparatus and chemicals.

Buzzcocks have reformed several times since 1989, featuring Shelley and Diggle with other musicians ; initially with Maher and Garvey for a world tour, then briefly replacing Maher with Smiths drummer Mike Joyce.

A partial reunion took place on 30 March 2007 at former Smiths ' bassist Andy Rourke's charity concert in aid of Manchester Versus Cancer.

On 13 October 2009 it was announced by Scottish & Newcastle that it planned to close the Dunston brewery in 2010, moving production of Brown Ale to the John Smiths Brewery in Tadcaster also.

The Smiths lived at their Potomac River home in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1958 until his death from pneumonia, after which Mrs. Smith relocated to a condominium on Marco Island, Florida.

The Smiths are interred at historic Oak Hill Cemetery in the Georgetown section of Washington, D. C.
