The phrase " mad as a hatter " pre-dates Carroll's works and the characters the Hatter and the March Hare are initially referred to as " both mad " by the Cheshire Cat, with both first appearing in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in the seventh chapter titled " A Mad Tea-Party ".

Although the name " Mad Hatter " was clearly done and inspired by the phrase " as mad as a hatter ", there is some uncertainty as to the origins of this phrase.

He later owned a furniture shop, and became known as " the Mad Hatter " from his habit of standing in the door of his shop wearing a top hat.

In the chapter " A Mad Tea-Party " in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Alice becomes a guest at a tea party along with the March Hare, the Hatter, and a sleeping Dormouse who remains asleep for most of the chapter.

The Hatter reveals that they have tea all day because time has punished him by eternally standing still at 6 pm ( tea time ).

" In the manga, Miyuki runs away after turning down the offer for tea ; in the anime, she's forced to sit and enjoy it as the Hatter tries to go up her shirt.

The Mad Hatter lives in a house shaped like a hat, and is usually seen at his perpetually set tea table.
