* 1942 – World War II: Second Battle of Kharkov: in eastern Ukraine, Red Army forces under Marshal Semyon Timoshenko launch a major offensive from the Izium bridgehead, only to be encircled and destroyed by the troops of Army Group South two weeks later.

But the German armies could not rest, for fear the Soviet southern armies ( now commanded by the stubborn Marshal Semyon Timoshenko ) would regroup and consolidate a front on the Donets or the Don.

Andrei is tipped off about this venture by Stepan Timoshenko, who commits suicide in despair at what is happening to his Soviet Union, but only after depositing a key piece of evidence with Andrei.

After presiding over the disastrous start of the campaign, and a disproportionally heavy death toll of Red Army soldiers, Voroshilov was replaced by Semyon Timoshenko as the commander of the front on January 7, 1940 ( and four months later as People's Commissar for Defense ).

Final details were settled following discussions between Stalin, the General Staff and the leadership of the Southwestern Strategic Direction led by Timoshenko throughout March and April, with one of the final Stavka directives issued on April 17.

On 14 May, the Germans continued to pound Soviet positions in the north in localised offensives and by then, the Luftwaffe had gained air superiority over the Kharkov sector, forcing Timoshenko to move his own air assets forward in order to effectively counter the bolstered Luftflotte 4.

The Ukrainian Front covered the southern sector of the Polish front in 1939, and included three Armies, commanded by Komandarm 1st rank Semyon Timoshenko.

On May 7, 1940, three new Marshals were appointed: the new People's Commissar of Defence, Semyon Timoshenko, Boris Shaposhnikov, and Grigory Kulik.

Stephen P. Timoshenko (,, December 22, 1878 – May 29, 1972 ), was a Ukrainian American engineer who is reputed to be the father of modern engineering mechanics.

As a loyal friend, Timoshenko survived Stalin's Great Purge, to be left as the Red Army's senior professional soldier.

Much to the chagrin of Timoshenko, German losses were only estimated to be minimal ; for example, only 35-70 tanks were estimated to have been knocked out in the 3rd and 23rd Panzer Divisions.

In addition to his textbooks, Timoshenko wrote two other books, Engineering Education in Russia and As I Remember, the latter an autobiography first published in Russian in 1963 with its English translation appearing in 1968.

In 1957 ASME established a medal named after Stephen Timoshenko ; he became its first recipient.

Timoshenko was born in the village of Shpotivka in the Chernigov Governorate of the Russian Empire ( now located in Sumy Oblast of Ukraine ).

Timoshenko was born into a Ukrainian farmer family at Furmanivka, in the Budjak region ( Southern Bessarabia ).

After the war, Timoshenko was reappointed commander of the Belorussian Military District ( March 1946 ), then of the South Urals Military District ( June 1946 ); and then the Belorussian Military District once again ( March 1949 ).

However, new evidence shows Stalin held meetings with a variety of senior Soviet government and military figures, including Vyacheslav Molotov ( People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs ), Semyon Timoshenko ( People's Commissar for Defense ), Georgy Zhukov ( Chief of Staff of the Red Army ), Nikolai Kuznetsov ( Commander of both North Caucasus and Baltic Military Districts ), and Boris Shaposhnikov ( Deputy People's Commissar for Defense ).

These included both those who were purged in 1937 – 38 ( Blyukher, Tukhachevsky and Yegorov ), and those who held high commands in the early years of World War II ( Budyonny, Kulik, Shaposhnikov, Timoshenko and Voroshilov ).
